Folks,

We've been investigating SIP MESSAGE support on the Poly devices and they seem to implement an expired draft RFC (https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/draft-ietf-simple-im-sdp-00) instead of complying with the actual published RFCs.

The end result is that sending SIP MESSAGE messages only works between Poly/Polycom devices, the devices can receive normal RFC compliant SIP MESSAGEs from other devices (a plethora of Softphones, Yealinks, etc), but any response to the received message fails.

The current configuration causes the device to send an INVITE to establish a dialog prior to the SIP MESSAGE, the INVITE looks like the below, where we can see m=message line in the SDP (which is the draft RFC).

INVITE sip:204@example.org:5060;user=phone;transport=tcp SIP/2.0
Via: SIP/2.0/TCP 10.23.5.149;branch=z9hG4bK6d08ab9aA3342F0B

Allow: INVITE,ACK,BYE,CANCEL,OPTIONS,INFO,MESSAGE,SUBSCRIBE,NOTIFY,PRACK,UPDATE,REFER
User-Agent: PolycomVVX-VVX_410-UA/5.9.8.5760_0004f2ce11f7
Accept-Language: en
Supported: replaces,100rel
Allow-Events: conference,talk,hold
Max-Forwards: 70
Content-Type: application/sdp
Content-Length: 159

s=Polycom IP Phone
c=IN IP4 10.23.5.149
t=0 0
m=message 5060 sip sip:x203@example.org

We've gone through all the configuration settings in the available manuals and can't find anything that manages this behaviour.

So the question is, how can we disable this draft RFC behaviour, we need the device to stop sending those INVITE messages so that it is interoperable with all the other standards compliant SIP devices and applications.
