Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Good evening,

I have a "HP Omen 25L Gaming Desktop - AMD Ryzen 7 3700X - Radeon RX 5700" which I bought from Costco over two years ago.

It is stock with all the same internal components. The only changes may be accessories/ peripherals and it still has Windows 10.

Per Costco, it is out of warranty

The other day maybe last week before I went to work I saw that it was somehow on but with an unresponsive black screen. I always completely shut down overnight and never do any updates or long downloads. I found the behavior odd and I opted to just unplug it and go to work

In that evening I sat down at my computer and it was not responding to the power button after plugging it back in. When it did it might beep a few times but always shut itself back off. The behavior is by no means consistent. The fans would stop spinning and the lights would turn off at different times each attempt at booting. No other problems with any other electronic components in my home

I did eventually get an eight long beep (BIOS issue) but as it tries to boot back into BIOS recovery it would shut off during this stage too. The recovery could never complete and would get maybe 40-60% of the way done.

I figured the computer may have tried to do an update somehow and I may have killed that mid process (truly no idea how though), but as it was at times getting back into BIOS recovery I thought it was a power issue. I replaced the PSU and have swapped the power cable but now if anything the behavior has worsened.

The tower may power on briefly for about five seconds but still immediately turn right back off (lights, fans, everything).

It is definitely not overheating as both the side panels are still off from replacing the PSU. Just about all internal connections have been reseated I believe, and I did at one point clear the CMOS with again no consistent change in behavior. It has always been on a power strip and the power strip itself is working for other devices

Any wisdom or guidance would be appreciated, thanks for your time. It has allwa

Thanks again for your help all this time. Against all my troubleshooting I believe I have had a problem that was suggested to me by my girlfriend though I initially didn't think that was it. In my own experience as a remote and deskside technician I have personally very rarely ever seen this failure maybe 3-5 times

The problem is more than likely within the physical power button of my desktop's top IO module. Between the mechanics in this failing (which could explain all shutdowns and the original power on incident) and my own dogs constant, never ending shedding I believe something may have gotten into the physical button and has been causing me grief

As a brief aside the HP YouTube channel should be advertised better, as it has a deep well of knowledge for a lot of desktops, laptops, printers and more https://youtube.com/@HPSupport. This helped guide me through some of the more unique part removals and reinstallations

After taking off the front and top bezel for the past hour or two my desktop has been almost 100% reliable. I have the top IO module kind of dangling internally for now and I have hit that and the top bezel with compressed air to clean it inside and out.

It has booted, completed POST and received windows updates which included an HP bios update. I don't believe the ram or CPU is the culprit when it's booting now. It has also stayed on for steam and GPU updates

I found another nice person on eBay who has a top IO module for sale and I have placed the order for it so hopefully they never had a dog and if problems persist I have a spare ready

Hi @Liqw1d

Welcome to the HP Forum.

Sounds like a corrupted BIOS.

You might be able to fix this. Please provide a specific HP Product Number to check for a recent BIOS update for your MB.

The newer HP BIOS updates provide an option to create a bootable USB BIOS recovery drive for your MB on a different PC.

Hello

What part number are you looking for exactly?

My HP support page has my product as OMEN 25L Desktop - GT12-0157c with a product number of 9EF22AA.

I did consider the possibility of a bootable drive, but I am  very limited with my desktops current standing. If I plug it in it stays on for about 5 seconds and then the lights and fans die. The power button is unresponsive. It used to get to a BIOS recovery screen but now it doesn't stay on long enough for my monitors to produce an image

This is why I considered it a power issue and replaced the PSU. I am considering to source and replace the motherboard but I am not confident this will fix. I have never modified the internal hardware of my PC

Hi @Liqw1d

Your MB, Moria3, SSID is 86D3.

Sorry, I can't find any BIOS updates for this MB.

Maybe a different Forum member can assist.

You should be able to fix the corrupted BIOS if someone can locate a recent (2023) BIOS for the MB.

Assuming I could put together a bootable drive with the latest BOOS how would I force an update when I can't even get to the advanced boot options menu?

Hi,

The HP USB BIOS recovery drive should flash the BIOS without user intervention.

I have seen many HP PCs, having a corrupted BIOS, repaired using a HP USB BIOS recovery drive.

Insert this drive in a USB port. Start the PC. The USB BIOS recovery drive repairs the BIOS.

Hi @Liqw1d

I think HP may be providing conflicting MB SSID information for your PC. The MB Spec site for your PC clearly shows a MB SSID of 86D3.

But all BIOS updates for this MB show MB SSID 87C3.This is why I did not provide a link to a 87C3 BIOS update.

Try downloading and running sp149209.exe on a different PC to make a USB BIOS recovery drive.

Try the USB BIOS recovery drive on your PC.

Also check this Forum Link having a Moria3 MB BIOS problem. I remembered this thread and thought it may apply in your situation.

The author of the above thread states the Moria3 MB installed in the GT12-0119 is MB SSID 87C3.

I do appreciate the help

I followed the steps provided here but using the latest available BIOS file for my desktop

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Business-PCs-Workstations-and-Point-of-Sale-Systems/What-is-the-proced...

But my desktop is still entirely unresponsive to my attempts at the power button. It lit up very briefly when I first plugged it in but now it's not getting any signs of life

Hi @Liqw1d

You're very welcome.

Sorry I could not help.

The detailed BIOS recovery steps provided by NonSequitur777 are very good.

I guess you may have a BIOS chip problem or a different hardware problem.

Maybe a local PC Tech can reprogram the BIOS using a serial BIOS programmer, or replace the BIOS chip and flash the BIOS, or isolate a different component which may have failed.

If I wasn't confused and scratching my head before I am now.

I was able to source an exact replacement on eBay for my motherboard and I just swapped it. I made sure to have no loose or extra screws to make sure I didn't miss anything. I even went out and bought new thermal compound and cleaned off the CPU and cooler before applying new. The replacement motherboard had a different CMOS battery on it

I still have the replacement PSU in place

I have removed all peripherals and ethernet cables, I am tried with one hard drive unplugged then the other, I tried with one RAM stick then the other, I rechecked all cables, I swapped the power cable

There is still no difference in the behavior now vs before.

If I am lucky I will hit the power button and the lights will come on and the fans will spin for about five seconds before it shuts off again. This is typically after I unplug it and hit the power button a few times too
