HP Pavilion 550-153na
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I've tried to upgrade the RAM in this machine from 2x4G to 2x8G modules.

Upon powering up I get 3 low and 2 high beeps and it won't post.

I have tried each module singly in each slot.

I have ensured the main board can accept total of 16G and they are if the correct specification.

The old original RAM still works fine when I reinsert them.

If I put one of the old sticks and one of the new sticks, the new stick is completely ignored.

This has led me to believe I have purchased some faulty modules.

Unless there is something I need to do in BIOS before changing RAM or have to set a jumper that I'm unaware of.

I have already set up bios to allow legacy devices (or whatever it was) to allow a display adapter upgrade.

Any help most welcome

Thanks.

Information from HP website about the 550-153na

RAM upgrade information

Dual channel memory architecture

Two 240-pin DDR3 DIMM sockets

Supports the following:

PC3-12800 (DDR3-1600)

PC3-10600 (DDR3-1333)

But when you read the info about the motherboard itself, the Odense....

Memory upgrade information

  • Dual channel memory architecture
  • Two 240-pin DDR3L DIMM sockets
  • Supports the following:
    • PC3L-12800 (DDR3L-1600)
    • PC3L-10600 (DDR3L-1333)
  • So thanks for that HP, if I was given the correct information to begin with then I wouldn't have wasted the best part of two weeks banging my head against the wall.

I have tried a different set of 8G sticks and they are not working either. Surely I can't have two sets of dead sticks.

They are allegedly compatible according to the documents on line. This has been confirmed by the vendor of the RAM.

So what else could it be?

Yes I believe so. The new RAM is certainly advertised as such.

The Kingston sticks are KCP316ND8/8 DDR3 1600MHz non ECC

And the other pair are

XUM DX8GDDR3U1600

8GB 2Rx8 DDR3 PC3-12800U - 1600MHz

I suggest you install the old RAMs and boot up the Notebook. Then update the BIOS. Link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers

Next try installing the new RAMs

Thanks for the continued help..

I have updated the BIOS and still have the same problem.

The HP Pavilion 550-153na is a desktop machine.

There were multiple (6) BIOS updates to choose from at https://support.hp.com/gb-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-pavilion-550-100-desktop-pc-series/8499648/model...

I have tried them all. Some say they are not compatible and do not allow me to continue.  At least one of the others appeared to do something, one or two others report that current version is newer than update.

My current BIOS version according to System Info is "AMI A0.18, 07/10/2016"
