Wait 15 minutes, and Windows will complete its start-up, and will function properly.
In this thread, contributors have suggested various bypasses:
* creating a new user account, and logging-in to it;
* using System Restore to time-warp your computer back to any checkpoint created before 10 AM Pacific on Tuesday, September 12;
* uninstalling one Windows Update;
* stopping and/or disabling the "App Readiness" background service;
* wait for Microsoft (not HP) to re-release the problematic update, so that Windows Update will download/install it.
Pick one.
I didn't do any of the above as such, just restart the appreadiness service with a simple script on each logon until the MS fix is out.

I did suggest what you did, namely stopping that service.
Thanks for confirming my suggestion.

I called PCworld uk today and was told to disable App readiness, I then contacted HP support who said they did not know of the problem even after telling them of all the problems on the forum. he said the only way to fix it is to do a full recovery what happens when it updates again. pcworld said that MS were aware and would do a fix. to that he said if they said that contact Microsoft then. not very helpful

I posted earlier that I also did a clesn install using Windows 10 downloaded from Microsoft and everything went great, then I installed all the HP programs that I wanted and found out a handfull wouldnt start, got error message saying service failed to start, I am still looking into why a handfull of HP programs wouldnt start under the retail version of Windows 10 via Microsoft medi creation tool even though they all installed without any errors, it may be due to Visual C++. I will try to download all the versions HP pre installed on my laptop and give it another go, have to download Visual C++ from 2005 up current both 32 and 64 bit...most programs and drivers will tell you they need something from Microsoft first and even ask if you want to download and install it before the driver/program installs.... but for now everything is good enough by disabling appreadiness and will wait to see if HP oe Microsoft puts out a patch or if its fixed in October 17th update .....Microsoft has turned all Windows users of Windows-10 into Beta Testers even if you dont want to be a Beta Tester, with these monthly updates you are a Beta Tester.....I may try using the retail version of Win-10 to upgrade HP pre-installed Win-10 and see if that fixes it to where I can re-enable appreadiness

for those who say they can only access task manager, what you do is click on file in task manager and choose "run a new task" then type in "Control Panel" this will give you access to whats needed to disable appreadiness...in control panel choose Administration Tools then choose Services, near the top you will see "appreadiness" right click on it choose properties and then choose stop and apply....your desktop should now be seen.... then change the start up state from manual to disable...reboot and everything should be fine again until a real fix comes out and not this work-around..

This post needs to be un-marked as solved! Any fix on here is a workaround, temporary, and attempt to hide the issue. This needs to be offciialy fixed by HP or Microsoft Update! Please Kudos this post so HP can see this.

It looks that this thread / issue got some traction:

Good luck!
