I tried to use the Diagnostic Tool SP 81314 on my PC only to find it needs to create a partition to work if you don't want to execute it from a USB stick. So when I realized my PC's only drive was MBR and already had 4 partitions I cancelled the process which was about 70% through and seemed frozen. Being an MBR Drive with 4 partitions, the last being C: Drive with the OS on it I wondered if it would have destroyed that partition. A warning would have been nice HP. So I shut down and rebooted and everything seems OK. I have no problems with the hardware but the current Diagnostic tool HP Ver 1.8.0.0 only tests the HD and Memory. Why HP Update Assistant doesn't update it I don't know. I would like to try the USB method toworrow so I was wondering if anyone has any tips?

Welcome to the HP Forums 🙂

I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers.

As I understand you need help with using the HP Diagnostics UEFI,

No worries, as I'll be glad to help you, that said, I'll need a few more details to dissect your concern & provide an accurate solution:

Is the computer booting into windows as off now?

Have you attempted to access the BIOS to check if the hardware is intact by running a smart test from BIOS?

Before you initiated the update that created a partition it would normally, tell you what it's for and what it does, did you get the notification?

While you check and respond to that, here's what I recommend you do:

You may Click here to access and/or download the recent update for the hardware diagnostics.

Installing the latest version of HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI)

HP occasionally makes updates to its HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) environment. For the steps to find the latest version see Updating the BIOS . You can install UEFI to a blank FAT or FAT32 formatted USB drive to use when the main storage device fails or when the UEFI files are corrupted. UEFI can be accessed from a USB drive by disabling Secure Boot.

  1. Download the latest version of UEFI, and then select Run.

    The InstallShield Wizard opens.

  2. Click Next.

    1: InstallShield Wizard

    InstallShield Wizard
  3. Select I accept the terms, and then click Next.

  4. Click Change to choose where to save the files.

The InstallShield Wizard automatically chooses to save the files on the computer hard drive. If you are installing UEFI on a USB drive, select the USB drive location.

    2: Location to Save Files

Location to Save Files UEFI Installation
  5. Click OK.

    3: Browse for Folder

    Browse for Folder UEFI Installation
  6. Click Next.

    The UEFI Setup Wizard opens.

    4: UEFI Setup Wizard

  7. Click Next.

  8. Select the install location, and then click Next.

Hi

Thankyou for your reply. I can access the BIOS, log into the OS, and have conducted diagnostics of the Hard Drive and Memory using the existing Diagnostics Version 1.8.0.0. They are the ony 2 things it will test. There is a DFS test which it says will take 306 minutes. I have not done that. Secure Boot is disabled, Fast Boot is disabled, the PC is in Legacy Mode.

I have followed the instructions regards putting the latest HP UEFI Diagnostics onto a USB stick. I powered off the PC. I plugged in the USB stick. The PC just booted into the OS without even acknowleding the plugged in USB stick which is how I thought it was supposed to work. If my existing BIOS MEM V80.20 is out of date will the updated HP UEFI Diagnostics work?

Cheers Noel

@nopejo

Thank you for responding,

It's great to have you back 😉

Once secure boot is disabled, the USB drive should be detected,

And since it isn't, I recommend that you run the DPS test (extended) and get back to me with the results as there may be a hardware malfunction.

And yes, the UEFI diagnostics would work on the old BIOS as well, if installed correctly.

Hi

I have checked the hard drive using the existing diagnostics ver1.8.0.0 and it checked OK. I can also access the hard drive with no problem. The DPS test will take 306 minutes according to the message on the screen showing number of minutes. Its a 3TB drive. I will have to do it overnight. I am thinking the problem could be the BIOS. When HP get the motherboards I speculate they have to put their own BIOS on in order for the HP UEFI Diagnostics to work. My current BIOS MEM VER 80.20 is listed in System Info as AMI 80.20 31/10/2014. This makes me think it is the preinstalled BIOS from American Megatrends Inc which hasn't ever been updated by a HP Bios that would allow the HP Diagnostics to work. As the HP BIOS updates for this motherboard are 80.22 and 80.23 I wonder what 80.21 is or where it is or if there was one.

Cheers Paul

Greetings @nopejo, I am the @Chimney_83. It looks like you were interacting with @Riddle_Decipher, but he is out of the office today so I'll take over from here.

Thanks for the reply and trying the suggested steps.

Based on the product number shared by you (HP Pavilion Desktop - 500-406a)

The BIOS update available on HP Drivers page of your computer is A0.14 Rev.A (Click here.)

Once BIOS update is installed, install UEFI diagnostics and run a system test.

Keep me posted.

Hi CHimney 83

Thanks for replying.

My SSID ROM Family is 2AF7 on a  Memphis S Motherboard with current BIOS AMI 80.20. Curent BIOS is not listed in HP Updates and I speculate may have come preloaded on a replacement motherboard. There are 2 BIOS for ROM family 2AF7 and they are 80.22 (Sp74198) and 80.23(Sp76898). Although Windows 10 is currently on the PC I believe Windows 8 was the original OS and was upgraded. These BIOS updates are listed under the Windows 8 section. All other BIOS updates under Windows 10 have the wrong SSID ROM family and I believe HP advise only using updates with the same ROM Family. Is there any chance of there being a problem doing a BIOS update if the SSID ROM family is the same? I assume the motherboards come from AMI with a preloaded BIOS and HP then install their own BIOS updates. Will there be a BIOS recovery option if something goes wrong in the update process?

Cheers Noel

@nopejo

Thank you for replying with this detailed response 😉

I appreciate your time and efforts,

To answer your question, yes it does come with a pre-installed BIOS,

And Yes, if something goes wrong with a recent update and BIOS is corrupt, you could always recover it:

I hope that helps!

Hi Riddle_D

  • I have had success at loading the HP UEFI Diagnostics via the USB Drive option. The Fast Test found all OK.
  • The problem now is I don't have a copy of my current BIOS AMI 80.20 (SSID ROM Family 2AF7) so if I damage it doing an update I won't be able to go back to it.
  • As I am not a business customer of AMI I can't get it from them and HP don't have a copy on their site. AMI have an APTIO BIOS 4 Update Tool however I don't want to update it from them as HP doesn't recommend that. Is there any way I can copy my current BIOS?
  • Cheers Noel

Thank you for responding,

It's great to have you back 😉

I'm glad to know that the BIOS recovery management didn't find any errors,

And about backing up the BIOS file, I must advise you to check the same link I had sent earlier about downloading a Bios file into an USB drive to recover bios in case the combination keys don't work.

The only version we can offer for download, is the one available on our HP website and you already have the link to it, if not:
