HP Pavilion Gaming Desktop TG01-2xxx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

I bought a HP Pavilion Gaming Desktop TG01-2054ns recently. It came with a single 16Gb RAM stick (SK Hynix DDR4-3200).

I wanted to buy another one to use the dual channel, but the specs page for its Erica6 motherboard (link : https://support.hp.com/hk-en/document/c07094657) doesn't make sense to me. It says (in the Memory upgrade information category) : "Supports 4 GB and 8 GB DDR4 UDIMMs" and, later : "Supports up to 32 GB (unbuffered) with two 16 GB DIMMs on 64-bit systems".

What does this mean ? What's the difference between 16GB DDR4 UDIMMS and 16GB DIMMs ? I've looked at other HP motherboards and some of them (like, the Erica - link : https://support.hp.com/rs-en/document/c06418627) specifically state that they support 16GB DDR4 UDIMMs. Is this just an oversight or can this have implications on my upgrade project ?

Thanks !

Hi:

It is an oversight, but when you read the countless other posts regarding upgrading HP gaming desktops, the aftermarket memory will most likely not run at the expected DDR4-3200 speed.

Your PC supports 2 x 16 GB of memory.

DIMM and UDIMM terms are used interchangeably.

You can always confirm how much memory your PC can run by doing this...

1. In the search box, search for cmd and click Run as administrator. This will open the command prompt.

2. Once command prompt is opened, type wmic memphysical get maxcapacity and hit enter. There, it will show the maximum RAM capacity your PC's motherboard can support.

The capacity is shown as Kilobytes, so you have to convert it to Gigabytes by dividing the number provided in the report by 1,048,576.

Thanks a lot, that makes sense.

Do you know if these problems with aftermarket memory affect every model of HP gaming desktops, and, if so, how to evaluate their impact ? I looked around before buying mine and from my understanding some people are saying that their RAM frequency is limited by the BIOS/mobo, but when I checked mine using CPU-Z (and other programs) everything looked normal to me. So I thought it was perhaps simply an issue with other, older motherboard models or something like that (there's a ton of tg01 submodels with different components).

Of course I'm a complete amateur regarding this kind of stuff so I may be completely wrong about all this.

You're very welcome.

Unfortunately, I don't know if your model would be exempt from such things.

If you look at this discussion, it happened on the model with the older Erica motherboard and Ryzen 3xxx processor.

Even the Intel models have this problem.

I'm thinking that yours will probably have the same issue as any of the others.

Thanks again (and happy new year !)

I installed a second (identical) RAM module and after checking the links you sent, I'm under the impression that I'm not having that issue. The task manager tells me that I have 32GB installed running at 3200MHz, and CPU-Z shows me what should be the "normal" values (Uncore and DRAM Frequency at ~1600MHz, which as I understand it from googling it is correct because 1600x2=3200, because double data rate and so on).

Seems to me like they adressed the issue (this one in particular, at least).

You're very welcome, and Happy New Year to you too!

You are correct...you have to multiply the report by two.

That is great news the aftermarket memory runs at 3200 MHz.
