This is my first time mucking about with computer guts, and I thought adding a new gpu would be simple but it looks like my model isn't very versatile for upgrades. The problems I've read in other threads are one, the power supply is way too low for anything decent, and two, the small compact case lends to overheating issues when adding stuff. Are these things I can upgrade around? Like a new case and power supply? Or are they too proprietary? I considered an external for these reasons, but can't seem to tell if they're self powered or if they draw through the computer, thus making the power supply issue still a thing. Additionally, those seem to connect through a thunderbolt cable or usb c, and my machine only has the usb a ports. Would an adapter suffice? And finally, are there any sort of compatability requirements for egpus? Or can I just grab any old boy off the shelf so long as the cords can connect?

hi
If you want to replace/add a graphics card, there are a few things you need to check
You have to check the manufacturers data, for the chosen model , Dimensions, power requirements, and additional pci connectors required >see @old_geekster 's kb

for the graphics card, I often recommend the Asus site with filter options

See if others offer it, price/performance may vary...
If you have the idea to replace more than the graphics card (sometimes no choice, you will have to change the power supply as well) The processor, going from 16 gb of ram to 32 gb for example depending on the age of the computer, this might not be advantageous so rather old, what you change may not be able to be reused, unlike the graphics card..Sometimes, for not that much cost, you could have a much newer, more capable computer.
I would need at least the exact model of the computer
there are solutions to add an external box, with more powerful power supply, but, frankly, it is not worth it with a desktop computer, because it is quite expensive!
New box, possible, but the same, it will be more advantageous to change everything..

re:"Like a new case and power supply? Or are they too proprietary?"
That is pretty accurate.
Slimline PCs are the worst case scenario for upgrading as they are so far from a standard desktop with open architecture.
Honestly, you would be better of either going the DIY route or upgrading to a prepaid unit that has a standard footprint case and a standard PSU type.
Otherwise, get ready for the hassle of finding compatible parts and measuring the system board, case and GPU slot area dimensions.
The external or eGPU products are usually externally powered, but they are quite pricey since once you buy the case you have to then purchase a GPU to put inside.
