Hi!

I bought the PC about 4 years ago with 6gb RAM installed. It always used to say that 5.18gb/6gb was usable. Multitasking became slow and tedious so I bought a new 2gb stick of RAM yesterday.  I installed the 2GB stick and the computer registered it. However, it still says only 5.18 gb /8gb usable.

I contacted Microsoft to see if it was an issue on their side, and after an hour of troubleshooting, they said to come here and ask about updating the BIOS.

I would really appreciate some help!

Hey!

I went back and opened up my PC. I was wondering if how i had placed the DIMM into the slot may have affected it. Soi rejigged to RAM and placed them in the 'correct' slots. It now recognises the extra 2gb!!

Hooray!

Anyway thank you!

Hi,

Open up Resource Monitor and take a snap image of the screen that is similar to the below image and post it to the forum:

Thanks for the reply.

Is this the correct screenshot?

@Mawdud

Your screen shot indicated that you had 8 GB installed. Changing the ram around did nothing as far as I can see.  You did have a lot of h/w reserved but then that's a different issue.

Hi,

the new 2gb stick I installed on top of the 6gb got automatically added to the hardware reserve. If you look at the new screenshot the 2gb is now able for me to use. Reverting back to the original 800mb kept for hardware reserve instead of the 2800 MB.

Wrong analysis.  :Surprise:

You need to clean up your analysis so the community is not mis-informed.  It's not hard to change the h/w reserved to make it show as you have posted.

Hi!

I am unsure why it would be a wrong analysis?

As you can see in the image it now says 7.18gb usable out of 8 GB. Before it was saying 5.18gb usable out of 8gb. That is why I asked the question. :generic:

I was wondering where the extra RAM I added was going.

If what i did is still completely wrong, I will happily revoke my answer. But doing it seemed to work for me...?
