I want to reset my old computer to factory setting to give it away. I have no Windows 8 installation disc or recovery media. I tried using a brand-new USB flash drive, but nothing is large enough. I simple want to clean the computer completely to make it as it was when I purchased it years ago. I am already using a new computer.

[ I discreetly withdraw, because @Prométhée has already anticipated too much. @Prométhée You should always remember that a user could be a beginner and guide him step by step. Too much information at once creates confusion ]

There is not so much information, it's basic, just follow what is indicated in the HP link..
Which is perfectly self-explanatory!
either you use the HP recovery function, or the Microsoft media, it is indicated, practically in all the answers here..
You had just wasted time, asking the user again what he had already mentioned, the model of the computer, is already indicated in his message, so you just have to ask for confirmation..

Apparently, I am over my skill level. I falsely believed I could reset this old computer to factory easily. It is almost 10 years old (bought in December of 2013)so probably not worth the trouble. I believe it was upgraded from a Windows 8.0 to Windows 8.1. I was hoping to offer it to someone as a gift because it runs fine, it is just old, and I purchased a new HP. Looks like I will be destroying it unfortunately. Thank you for the assistance and offers to help.

It's not very complicated
if the function is still present, just follow what is indicated
do you therefore have the possibility of opening the software as indicated?
if this is not possible, you can do otherwise
https://www.groovypost.com/howto/install-windows-81-easy-way/
this is just an example, you will find many tutorials of this type
