HP machine will not turn off when shut down from windows 7 pro

when shutting down from windows the hp machine will not turn off, it just sits there with both fans running, the only way to shut it off is to push and hold the power button, blue are lights are still on as well, any info on how to fix this problem.

shutdown.exe

And using that. C:\Windows\System32\. I think.

There is no need to "search" for it.

From a command-line prompt, enter:   echo %PATH%

to get output that includes:

   C:\Windows\system32;

   C:\Windows;

amongst other entries.

So, just typing 'shutdown' will cause Windows to look in all the folders named in that "path" for 'shutdown.exe'.

But, I doubt that manually invoking 'shutdown' will fix the problem.

Enter BIOS SETUP, and check that that the computer is NOT set to automatically power-on to resume after the end of a power-less situation.

Ductbery would have to have modified the BIOS.

Ductbery, did you modify the BIOS so your PC would not shutdown unless you depress and hold the power button? If you did this, then reset the BIOS to defaults.

Question for Ductbery. What does "it just sits there mean"?

Please describe when this problem happens. Is this happening when shutting Windows down using the Start Menu?

Is the PC still running but Windows shuts down or does Windows continue to run? The first scenario means it could be a fault on the motherboard (which may include problems in the BIOS or hardware). The later scenario suggests a Windows system problem. Very complex issue.

I can't provide any additional help without more information. What exactly is happening?

Ductbery, your PC was released for sale in 2011.

It sounds like a power switch, power supply, or possible motherboard problem if your PC's only issue is a clean shutdown using the Windows software shutdown function. Are you having any other problems with your PC?

Replace the CR 2032 motherboard battery while you are troubleshooting. Easy and inexpensive troubleshooting technique which sometimes solves strange issues.

A windows system file problem can possibly be fixed by running a Microsoft System File check.

the bios has not been modified the bios is set to defaults the computer doe not switch off when shut down

from windows, as stated it just sits there with blue lights still on and both fans still running, this has a new install of

windows 7 pro with all updates installed, the thang is it just started doing this a few months ago. I think the bios need

an update but there is not one that exisit to my knowleged, HP does not show to have one because they dont post it.

I'm very computer tecky but never have run into this kinda problem before, this why I come to ask u folks for a tip.

Things I have done to resolve this issue --- I have another HP machine so I removed the RTC battery from it and Install it in the problem machine booted to windows and performed a shut down -- same issue machine will not switch off -- so looking at the power supplys in both machines they are axact the same -- so I have switch out power supplys booted to windows -- same issue -- the machine will not swith off.

One other problem I have is the machine will not wake from sleep this is because the machine does not switch off from shutdown or suspend mode.

I have tride all power mangement functions in windows and in bios  -- I believe their is a problem with the motherboard, the only way to tell is replacement, found a new listed on ebay for 26.00 dollors I think I will buy it and give it a try.

Or the bios need an update which I can find, may HP has one laying around they can shoot to me.

What are you touching to end the "sleep":

* one "tap" on the power button?

* pressing one key on the keyboard?

* moving/clicking the mouse?

The very last step that Windows takes, in response to a "shutdown" (command-line or GUI) is to send a signal to the motherboard to tell the computer to "power-off".  If the motherboard is not correctly responding to that signal, i.e., by restarting, then the next step that you have proposed, namely to replace the motherboard, is the correct response.

No, there is no sleep button or if is it does not work, I put another power switch on it - - same issue will not switch off

when shutdown.

yes, I do need a replacement motherboard, that what it falling too.
