I have a brandnew EliteDesk 800 G3 TWR and sure enough the first update of Windows doesn't work. Update 1709 will be downloaded but at reboot it enters into a "Restoring previous version" cycle. Error codes seem to vary, though (4 attempts so far):
Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x8024200D: Feature update to Windows 10, version 1709.
Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x800704C7: Feature update to Windows 10, version 1709.
Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80246013: Feature update to Windows 10, version 1709.
Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x800704C7: Feature update to Windows 10, version 1709.
Other Windows updates seem to work successfully.
What to do? To me it seems a Windows Reset is the only way out?
Pretty annoying that this fails out of the box...

OK,
finally issue is resolved. Here is the story: I had a Creative Soundblaster Z card installed in my PC (I need SPDIF to connect to my speakers). All seemed to work as expected but apparently the driver update coming with 1709 did crash. Unfortunately Windows Update does not provide any specific information (as far as I could find) to track down this problem.
Anyhow, I had to physically remove the card, let Windows do the 1709 update and then re-install the card again. After all this, also the drivers for this card had a more recent version.
Let's keep fingers crossed that also future updates will now work...
Thanks for all the helpful replies anyhow!

Have you run the "trouble-shooter" -->
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4027322/windows-update-troubleshooter
to find & repair problems within Windows Update?
What did it find?
What did it fix?
What did it NOT fix?

Yes, did it
after each of the 4 fails. It seemed to be able to fix everything. But afterwards the same problem...
The "fixed" issues were these 3:
Potential Windows Update Database error detected. There is a dism.log created which shows some errors...
Windows Update components must be repaired
Check for pending updates
All 3 are marked with a green "Fixed" tickmark
BTW: I did also run dism and sfc, none found anything abnormal.

Which of the error-codes was produced?
Since you say that your HP computer is "brand new" and "out of the box", contact HP, and get support from them, rather than continuing on this "user-to-user" forum.

I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post personal information (serial numbers and case details).
If you are unfamiliar with how the Forum's private message capability works, you can learn about that here.
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forum.

I also have a brand new HP Elitedesk 800 G3 tower. I went through all of the recommended updates successfuly until I came to 1709. The install would start and then hang at about 24-64% when I left it over night. (Multiple times.)
I have installed my 'regular' programs (Chrome, Dashlane, Office 365, Norton Security...) Still can't get 1709 to complete install.

Please open a new posting, and give the details about your model-number, and the size of each of each partition on the disk-drive, and any error-message, and the results from running the HP Hardware Diagnostic software, to separate your problem from this thread.
