Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Windows had an error and keeps saying that I need a windows boot disc I don't want to lose my pictures or anything on there and cant get it to work without the windows program but when I bought the desktop it didn't come with the windows program. How can I fix this without losing my data on my hard drive.

it can be a material problem!
You can try several things in order to try to recover your data, I give some explanations here, but in French!

You can try a bootable cd / dvd type live cd (linux)

you can try removing the hard drive, in order to connect it to another computer internally, or with a usb adapter!

There can be a variety of reasons why that message appears.

1) the boot manager is corrupted and it cannot find the proper file to start the bootup process

2) there is a DVD/CD in the DVD drive or possibly a media card in a card reader

3) Since the PC is old enough to have Windows 7, maybe a disk in the floppy drive

4) the hard drive has failed

 

If the hard drive has failed, it will need to be replaced and Windows reinstalled.  DO NOT try messing with anything concerning the hard drive if we are that point.  You may or may not be able to recover data from the old drive.  I can give some ideas to try if we get to that stage, but after the new drive is in place and Windows is working.

As your computer is running windows 7 I guess your hard disk is old and starting to fail.  If you have very important stuff on it take it out and put it into another computer, it should appear as a secondary drive. You  could put it into a usb to hard disk caddy and save off all that you need that way too. Don't try to install or reinstall windows on it as it will only make it worse if it is failing.  There are plenty of videos on youtube on how to remove and reinstall a hard drive safely.  It should also be on the hp support page for that model.

So if you had not created the recovery kit, and this is no longer possible, you will need to find a windows installation media, to install on another hard drive
You can take the opportunity to try a ssd, this site can help you
