Solved!

desktop computer has Window 10. When I click on Shutdown, the computer never completely shuts down

HP Recommended
HP Slim Desktop S01-aFO
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

After clicking on Shutdown, the computer never completely shuts down. There is always some light shining at the back of the tower and the the external back-up drive also remains switched on.

1. Will the inability of shutting down the computer harm the computer and shorting its lifespan and that of the external back-up drive.

2. How can I shutdown the computer totally and completely.

Hi,

This is not a problem and will not damage components. AC power spikes can damage electronic components if you don't use a UPS or, at minimum, a surge protector to protect this device.

The motherboard will always have some residual power because HP does not include a power switch on the power supply.

You would have to unplug the PC from AC power, or turn off the UPS or surge protector, and depress the PC power button to drain all residual power from the motherboard.

Regards

Thank you, GRZWACZ, for your super-fast reply and especially, for putting my mind at ease. Thank you, too, for explaining the reason so well and clearly.

Best regards
