I should have asked, is this a desktop.
Read this, but drop down to configure external speakers

Did you plug the green cable into the green jack on your computer?
Then turn the volume control knob to the right?
In the taskbar, the volume button. Did you adjust the volume up?

Hi Dean, I truly appreciate your help but I maybe should have pointed out I am a computer novice so you'll have to use layman's language not your fancy tech-speak. The only green cable I have connects to my printer. Perhaps this might be relevant (or not) but coincidentaly, sound now comes out of my hard drive (although not sure how to turn this off) so I've found an icon at bottom left of screen which mutes it. Power must be reaching the speaker because the light is on (howzat for female logic) - so why no sound? And if you're still there and haven't turned off in bewilderment, try to think of it as takling to a 5 year old. Thanks again.
Regards
Carol

Dean, it's a miracle! Got up this morning, tried speakers and lo and behold they are now working. Not only the right speaker that's got the volume control but the left speaker which did not work before. I can only assume all my poking and proding did some good, either that or the HP fairies came in the night. No Dean I'm not calling you a fairy - not after all your time and trouble. Am sending you a virtual hug.
Regards
Carol

Whatever mystery/miracle/gentle prodding created a solution. I am profoundly happy for you.
I'll take a virtual hug any day. Thank you.
