After the most recent update of the HP Support Assistant app on my HP desktop, I now have 2 of the app's icons appearing on my taskbar. They both show "HP Support Assistant" when I hover over them. But, only 1 starts the app when clicked. The other does nothing.

How do I eliminate the "dead" icon from the taskbar?

Thank you for your reply. However, the issue was fixed several days ago. I had tried reinstalling the support assistant only to have the second icon re-appear. I had already tried the fixes included in your link with no success.

After the re-install failure, I uninstalled it and rebooted the PC. That left 1 icon still. I contacted Microsoft Tech Support. They had me reinstall the app. This time, it worked. No 2 icons. Only the one, working icon.

Thanks again for trying to help.
