Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I noticed a new File in my Program Data called Portrait Displays containing another folder called HP Display Control Service. These folders contain no data and are in read only status. They seem to serve no purpose what so ever except for the fact that they are creating Temp files in my Windows Temp Folder. Screenshot 2023-02-19 134401.jpg

Below is screen shot of one of the Application Temp file as they contain data.  Untitled.jpg

I have tried to open one of these Application Temp files but they will not open no matter what program I select to open it and I am the administrator. I would also like to mention that this Portrait Displays file also appears in my wife's HP Envy Laptop in the Program  Files and exhibits the same behavior. I have tried to delete this file and it will delete but as soon as I restart my computer it comes right back. I have scanned this file with Norton 360, Malwarebytes and MSERT with all negative results. If you notice from the above pic that this file is copyrighted by  Portrait Displays Inc. https://portrait.com/ . I use NVIDIA so I do not need nor want an HP Display Control Install Utility. This appears to be bloatware that HP has put on computers either by some optional update or by stealth. I would like to know what this program is and how can I get rid of it as it clearly serves no purpose except to generate temp files. This is the type of thing that when Microsoft sends an HP optional update to user's computers it needs to include a link about what the update  is for so we can decide if we want to install it on our computers. The MS Update Catalogue is just useless to find out about an optional update as the update in question to install is 99.9% of the time not there yet.

hi sorry @DonT54

if you want to know, I hadn't paid attention
that another user, it was embedded without warning, I always thought discussed with the same person
so, whatever, don't delete anything like that!
this is of no particular consequence , leave it as it is

all I can tell you is that I installed the program from the files mentioned above
and that after uninstalling, I have no temporary file that appears

@DonT54  don't bother with this thing

hi

it's an old screen utility program
either it is still installed, in which case you should be able to uninstall it
either it just has features more or less present, and can be more difficult to get rid of

Thank you so much for your reply. I have tried every conceivable way to get rid of Portrait Displays but it keeps generating itself every time I restart my computer.  I was wondering if you may have any suggestion on how to rid my computer of this junk. I did find the below in my registry MUI Cache and was wondering if I deleted these two that maybe it would help get rid of it.

If the program has already been uninstalled, then as indicated you may have difficulty removing residue
So the question is, have you ever deleted this program somehow?
temporary files, are usually created by a program, if there is a use, a report must be created etc.
it is necessary to delete the source in general, otherwise, it will come back each time

Thank you for your response. I have never seen or heard of this program before until now. I adjust all my display values via my monitor which is an HP27sv. I have tried looking for the source of this program to no avail. I do appreciate your help in this matter as I am stumped. I did search my C: Drive for anything HP Display and I found the below if that will help.

this software could be installed from origin, or was installed later, with the monitor for example, with a cd / dvd, which accompanied it..
or via hp support assistant!
that I cannot know
but we see here, in your picture
C\ program Files\Portrait Displays
so either it is installed, in which case it should be in the list of installed programs!
Either it has already been done, and there are still traces, but there it may be difficult to delete everything, and without risk

Thank you again for your reply. I have never had, installed or uninstalled a program of that nature and I have closely looked in installed programs in Windows 10 and in CCleaner and nothing is there. I have not received an update through HP Support Assistant in several years now since MS started sending out optional Updates for HP that have no info as to what they are for. My monitor never came with any type of CD/DVD. My wife's HP Envy laptop HP ENVY - 17m-ce0013dx is the same way with this program as my Omen Desktop. I know you have done all you can do  in this matter and I so appreciate it but is there a way to escalate this to HP?

curious, I had different hp computers in hand, and none had the original utility!
and so far the ones that have been mentioned this for the most part have been with all-in-one computers..
When you open the program Files folder, what do you have as file names here (image if possible of the content)

If no longer under warranty, HP probably won't be able to do anything for you.

(edit) Note

moreover, I had tested this program for another question here, and I have nothing left the folder is empty, I had uninstalled it then!

C:\Program Files\Portrait Displays\HP Display Control Service

Thank you again for your response. I am out of warranty on my Omen as well as my wife's Envy Laptop. I too have read that this program was for All-In-One systems as well so when doing my research I kept wondering why do my wife and I all of a sudden have it as we do not need it. I am including the screen shots per your request along with the properties. I think but I could be wrong that maybe the security settings for these files may have something to do about whether they can be deleted. It would be interesting to know how many other HP Computers are experiencing this with this file. May HP Devs could send out an update to correct this. Thank you so much again for your help.
