Display working fine until today.  Changed monitor with same result -- black and white only.

you said to have changed the monitor, under product, it is mentioned HP All-in-One PC 24-df1000i (1W761AV)!
So what exactly did you replace, you're not talking about an added external monitor, but the computer panel?
So if it is the computer screen, it is possible that it is another damaged component, graphics card for example, or another component of the screen
so can you test an external monitor?

Sorry wrong computer.  The problem is the current one which is a HP Pavilion Desktop, AMD Ryzen 3 5300G, TP01-2032, 2021.  I tried a Dell and a HP color monitor.  When the computer is booted up, both appears to want to show color but immediately goes into black and white mode.

not a good sign because obviously no pci graphics card?

Has anything changed between when it worked and now?

Nothing changed.  It worked fine the previous night.  Ran and passed all hardware diagnostic tests including video memory.  The screen display showed normal blue progress bar and green checkmarks while tests were being run.  After exiting the diagnostic tests, the display reverted back to black and white only.

Problem solved.  Did a PC reset after passing all diagnostic tests.  Thank you to all who provided comments that led to a successful solution.
