I've rebooted it several times and troubleshooted the display settings and enabled and disabled the theme nothing seems to work. I even did a hard reset. ( heald power down for 10-15 sec. and turned it back on ) does anyone know how to resolve this ???

Hi @ChristRedeemer,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I know how frustrating it is when your HP laptop’s home screen goes completely black, especially after trying multiple resets and display tweaks. Let’s walk through a few deeper troubleshooting steps that might help resolve this issue.

1. Try Safe Mode

Booting into Safe Mode can help isolate the issue:

  • Hold Shift while clicking Restart from the Start menu.
  • Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  • Press F4 to boot into Safe Mode.

If the screen works in Safe Mode, it’s likely a driver or theme issue.

2. Check for Display Driver Issues

  • Press Windows + X → Device Manager.
  • Expand Display Adapters.
  • Right-click your GPU (Intel/NVIDIA/AMD) → Uninstall device.
  • Restart your laptop — Windows will reinstall the driver automatically.

You can also update the driver from the manufacturer’s site.

3. Reset Windows Explorer

Sometimes the shell crashes and causes a black screen:

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  • Find Windows Explorer, right-click → Restart.

4. Disable Fast Startup

Fast Startup can cause boot issues:

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do.
  • Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.
  • Uncheck Turn on fast startup.
  • Save and restart.

5. Perform System Restore (if available)

If the issue started recently:

  • Go to Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore.
  • Choose a restore point before the issue began.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
