My display is now 1/2 to 1 inch smaller than the monitor screen size -- and icons/images are slightly distorted. Cause of reduced display size is unknown (possible cat on keyboard or inadvertent pressing of monitor controls). HP desktop and monitor are 5+ years old, with updated Windows 10 and device drivers). Windows 10 display recommended resolution is 1024-768, but it provides 1280-1024 option (selecting 1280-1024 does not seem to change display size). Resolution indicated using monitor controls is 1920-1080. HP website recommends 1600x1280 for 20" or larger monitors. Have tried ctrl+0 or control+39 (simultaneous or sequential) and other recommended fixes. No luck yet.

Greetings @Fc34,
Thanks for the post
I understand that you are facing an issue with the monitor where the display is not covering the whole screen, is that right?
Kudos to you for trying to troubleshoot the issue on your own.
Not to worry, I will be glad to assist you.
The issue you are facing could be an issue with the monitor settings or the display adapter settings on your computer.
Request you refer to this HP Article which explains the OSD options available on your monitor.
Perform a factory reset using the button on your monitor and if the issue is with the monitor the factory reset would resolve the issue you are facing.
If the issue persists, uninstall the display adapter from the device manager on your computer and restart your computer.
When you restart your computer a generic driver would be installed and then you can install the driver back using HP Support Assistant.
Let me know if this helped.

HP Support Team and others: Yes, the recommended solution did work, eventually, although I am still not certain it will last. After uninstalling and removing the updated (July 2017) ATI Radeon HD 4200 driver (which took three uninstalls and restarts on my PC, probably because there were multiple copies of that driver on my PC), Windows started using a Basic Microsoft display adapter driver, although this driver did NOT restore the functionality of the display/monitor (by expanding and correcting the display). I then used the OCD (the manual control button on my HP 2311x monitor) to try to do a factory reset. Either that action or the system itself then replaced the Basic MS driver with a 2015 version of the ATI Radeon HD 4200 driver. This change restored the full functionality of the monitor (the display expanded to the edge of the monitor and the distortions were eliminated). Within 5 minutes, however, the system (Windows 10, I presume) updated this driver to the 2017 version and the previous loss of functionality returned. Nevertheless, I was then able to use the display settings properties screen to "Roll Back" to the previous 2015 driver, and once again restore the monitor functionality. It has now stayed that way for at least a couple of hours, so maybe this time was the charm. I guess I should call that success.
