Changing brightness from keyboard does not work anymore after latest windows 11 updates. I had this problem year earlier but fixed it by using old Intel 770 driver but after latest windows updates that stopped working (it still had old driver).

Anyone found a solution? I tried installing latest drivers from HP but didn't fix it. I can change brightness from control panel as a workaround for now.

Hi @rogerkl,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

We understand how frustrating it is when the brightness control keys on your HP ENVY 34-inch All-in-One Desktop PC 34-c1000 (IDS Base Model) stop working after a Windows 11 update, especially when it had been resolved previously with an older Intel driver.

Let’s walk through the steps to help restore brightness control functionality.

Steps to Fix Brightness Control Issues

1. Update Graphics Drivers from HP

Even if you've already tried this, please ensure you're using the latest HP-certified Intel Graphics Driver for your model and Windows 11.

👉 HP ENVY 34 inch All-in-One Desktop PC 34-c1000 | HP® Support

  • Select Windows 11 as your OS.
  • Download and install the Intel UHD Graphics 770 driver listed under “Driver-Graphics.”
  • Restart your PC after installation.

2. Disable Automatic Driver Updates (Optional)

If the older driver worked better, you can prevent Windows from automatically replacing it:

  1. Open Control Panel > System > Advanced system settings.
  2. Go to the Hardware tab and click Device Installation Settings.
  3. Select “No (your device might not work as expected)” and save.

This prevents Windows Update from overwriting your manually installed driver.

3. Use HP Support Assistant

HP Support Assistant can detect missing or outdated drivers and apply fixes.

👉 HP Support Assistant | HP® Support

  • Open the app and run a full system check.
  • Install any recommended updates, especially related to graphics and firmware.

4. Check BIOS Settings

Sometimes brightness control issues are tied to BIOS-level settings.

  • Restart your PC and press Esc or F10 to enter BIOS.
  • Look for Display or Graphics Configuration.
  • Ensure brightness control is enabled and not overridden by external display settings.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Thanks very much for the info. Unfortunately I tried all those steps except for BIOS one. I just did but I see no graphics settings anywhere in the BIOS menu.

Btw it broke right after this update but it was always broken really and my workaround was to use a very old Intel 770 driver which worked until this WU:

2025-09 Cumulative Update Preview for Windows 11 Version 24H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5065789) (26100.6725)

I did also did a clean install by deleting the 2 graphics drivers (Intel 770 + NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Laptop GPU), then rebooting and then reinstalling the drivers. But still broken. I do see the brightness popup when you press the brightness keys but it doesn't change the value. At least I can rule out a keyboard issue.

With the latest Intel 770 driver provided by HP I cannot change brightness plus when screen locks and you login again, I cannot even change brightness then from windows settings control panel. So I tried one more thing to install the newer driver for Intel(R) UHD Graphics 770 from Intel's web site: 31.0.0101.4502. That one at least fixes the brightness breaking from control panel when locking/unlocking. But keyboard still can't control brightness.

I also tried changing brightness using a WMI powershell script but brightness here apparently can only be controlled by some custom OEM code. Hoping for a workaround:-(.

Not sure anything else I can try? Will try to uninstall KB5065789 but eventually I'll have to install it. UPDATE: tried rollback update and after reboot still broken:-(.

I've not seen an invite yet. The 24H2 windows update was installed again and that breaks the brightness adjustment in the control panel when coming out of hibernation. In that case I have to reboot to get that working again (keyboard brightness adjustment never works, just see a brightness popup that's stuck).
