Many thanks Dgrenker this was the fix! I could see in the firmware description it also said dynamic contract fix so very encouraging. I did have have issues connecting properly to my monitor but in the end with the USB to USB-c to the monitor (make sure it is not in sleep) it did finally work. I actually didn't expect a solution for this... Great day for humanity! 😀

I keep getting the idiotic "Firmware update ERROR!" Please check it" message but nothing I do makes any difference. I only have USB and power connected and it constantly tells me to detach and reattach those or gives the error message. The USB hub didn't even seem to be working when I set it up - no devices (memory sticks, running watch etc) were recognised. In addition the warranty history tells me this was returned by someone else so this is going straight back to HP, and I want a refund. I won't be buying any HP products again after this experience. They've clearly outsourced their firmware and so on so some sweatshop somewhere and English is not their first language. Nor is UX since it's terrible. I've never had to remove all display inputs to update firmware on something before. Total garbage.

Further research: The stupid firmware tool cannot cope with other USB hubs. I plugged in to my laptop instead of my desktop and the laptop is not using an external hub, the desktop is. Only difference I can think of. That being said, the USB on the monitor still doesn't work on my desktop (Asus Z170 Pro Gaming mobo), but it does if I plug it in to my work XPS15. Which isn't much use because it's for my desktop PC, which supports USB 3 and 3.1. Why the hell won't it just work? Every other USB device does.

I tried this with a USB-C to USB-C cable and it didn't work, I then tried it with a Thunderbolt 3 cable and it worked forst time. Thunderbolt 3 cables have the little lightening strike symbol on the connectors in case anyone isn't aware of this.
