Hello community. My monitor has recently stopped playing videos correctly. It's an external monitor connected to my Lenovo laptop via a cable. Videos are freezing completely, or the sound starts but no video, or the sound stutters and goes into a loop and no video, or the video stutters and goes into a loop, or the spinning thing simply carries on spinning.

This seems to be a problem with the Lenovo was the PC and the video driver handle the streaming.

Connect the monitor to a Blu-ray play or the cable tv provider to verify the monitor is working.

Thank you. I had the monitor working again after a hard reset but now it's faltering again. I don't have another monitor to plug the lenovo into. The lenovo displays videos just fine, but I use the larger monitor on my desk.

Try a different resolution or refresh rate.  The laptop cannot keep up.

Alternately, use the exact same resolution as the laptop screen.

If the Lenovo's graphic chip shares memory with the motherboard you may need to get into the bios and allocate more memory so as to handle both displays.

Another possibility is (I am guessing) that the raw video is stereo 7.1 and the CPU is converting to 2 channel for the monitor.  See if the player can select a different audio source (channel or stream) that is only 2 channel to start with.  I have seen this on mp4 encoded video that was streaming to my tablet.

are you mirroring or extending the display?  If extending, try mirroring with exact same resolution.

I just tried disconnecting the usb hub from the laptop and, after a bit of stuttering and some lag, the videos seem to be 'catching up'. Therefore, it *may* be an issue with the laptop, but it was all working fine about 3 weeks ago. A windows update, perchance... I will have a look at the suggestions, though - thanks again.

It's really hit and miss now. If I change the cables, it doesn't work for a moment and then it works. If I do a reset, it works for a while and then it doesn't work. If I increase the refresh rate it works for longer, but if I pause it, it starts to lag. The monitor is still under an extended warranty so support are going to call me.  Thanks again for your help. 🙂
