Paul (or anyone else that might be able to help!), my company just bought several of these computers refurbished from HP and I want to load Windows 7 on them.  When I get the Windows 7 install DVD to the point where it lets me start the install, I am asked for drivers.  I am guessing that it is looking for chipset drivers so that it can properly detect the hard drive in the machine.  I've looked around and believe that I even put the drivers from the model of computer you mentioned onto a CD and went through them to find the right one but to no avail.

Might you know which driver I am to use?  I've attached the screen shot that I am currently at.

Thanks,

Dennis

Hi, Dennis:

Please see this related thread at the link below for the most likely solution to the problem.

Paul and Kyle:

Thank you both for your quick response to me; it is greatly appreciated.

The DVD that I've tried (which was one with 32-bit Win 7 and a different one with 64-bit Win 7) is one that I've used in many other different machines.  In fact, yesterday even after failing in this particular machine, I tried the 32-bit version in three other kinds of machines and it did work just fine.  I even tried the Microsoft USB/DVD solution on a pen drive.  Booting off of it caused the same problem as well.  I've not tried the USB pen drive in a different computer but will do so tomorrow to make sure that that is valid.

Also tomorrow I will get you the exact product/model number Kyle that you have requested.

Thanks,

Dennis

Also, the product I'm trying to install is Win 7 Enterprise with SP1 that I got right off of the Microsoft Volume Licensing site that we have access to; that doesn't make a difference does it?

Thanks,

Dennis

You're very welcome, Dennis:

That shouldn't matter.

Another forum member states that if you go into the BIOS and change the drive controller to IDE, W7 will install.

If you do it that way and it works, the problem is that you lose the enhanced features AHCI gives to a hard drive, such as native command queuing.

If you have a p7-1410, and windows 7 installs that way, please post back and I will give you the instructions to install the correct SATA AHCI driver so you can change the drive controller setting back to AHCI because you just can't change it.

Windows won't boot unless the driver is installed.

I'm almost positive that I've tried both AHCI and IDE for the SATA mode.

Hi, Dennis:

If you have verified that you have the full file size of the ISO you downloaded (compare against the download site's advertised file download size), and you have tested the DVD/Flash drive and it works on other PC's, and you have changed the drive controller setting to IDE, RAID, AHCI, and it still doesn't work, then I am stumped.

Other than the AHCI and IDE settings for SATA, should there have been any other settings at all in the BIOS that I should have changed?  Should either the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Win 7 Enterprise install on this computer?

Thanks,

Dennis

Hi...I THINK I might have figured it out.  This morning, I reset the BIOS back to its default settings.  I then turned off secure boot, enabled legacy boot support and and tried my 32-bit DVD - it did not work.  I then went in and changed SATA from AHCI to IDE mode and tried my 32-bit DVD - it then worked!!!

So I loaded Windows, got the chipset from your link back in 2012 (which got rid of one of the unknown devices in Device Manager) and then I searched the Realtek site for the 32-bit version of the NIC drivers as the one in the link you gave me wouldn't work - they said they were for 64-bit systems.  I then was able to go to Windows Update on the computer and it found drivers for the video, audio, wireless LAN and some other Intel devices.

So right now, the computer is successfully running in SATA IDE mode and in the process of downloading and installing around 125 drivers/updates/etc. from Microsoft.

I will keep you posted if I run into troubles or still have devices that are showing up as unknown.

Thanks,

Dennis
