I have had a new BT router for high speed broadband and I use a MacBook Air. The blue wireless light is flashing

I think the solution was to install software for a printer in this case.  Did you by chance mean a Deskjet 2540 rather than Desktop 2540?  Here is more on the Desktjet 2540 if this is the case.  If so, you may want to bookmark or save the information:

Thanks for the reply. Yes of cause it is Deskjet. I was probably going demented with trying things. Followed the procedure until it comes up with the message "Unable to connect with selected device. It may have been turned off or otherwise disconnected" but it is on with the blue light blinking slowly, the white light on steady and the exclamation sign next to the wifi symbol on the screen on. The strength indicator is not showing.
