Thank you soooo much. Your steps were extremely helpful. I am now back to my normal screen brightness. I can't thank you enough.

Like I said very easy steps you made to fix my problem. I have a Samsung computer and once I did the windows update I had horrible screen display. You made it so easy to figure and change it back to the better Thank you again soooo much { a monkey could do this with your instructions}

An update - the HP My Display worked absolutely fine. What happened was I installed a version which was compatible for Windows 8 and after restarting my computer, the program was able to adjust the brightness. Perhaps restarting is the key here. Thanks to all for the ideas!

I fixed it.  Don't update drivers or edit the registry.  Do this:

1. Go to Search  (point at upper right corner) and type Device Manager.  Go there.

2. Expand Display Adapters

3. Right-click Intel(R) HD Graphics and Left-click Disable

4. Restart your computer

      (Your screen resolution might be distorted now.  Just ignore)

5. Go back to Device Manager, Display Adapters

6. Right-click Intel(R) HD Graphics and Left-click Enable

7. Restart again

Fixed!

(If at any point your screen goes blank and won't come back, just HOLD DOWN your power button until the computer shuts down.  Then press power again to start up.)
