To answer the question: How can I remove the HP Launcher from the mac desktop?
I just spoke to HP Simple Save support, there is no way to "remove" it as the Launcher is encoded in the hard drive firmware. The Terminal command doesn't "fix" the problem, it provides a decent option that allows the unmounting of the "Launcher" icon from the desktop.
I would not purchase these hard drives for Mac Users as this problem will surely confuse the average user.

I tryed everything in mac and ubuntu to get rid of the "HP launcher", no go, came here and, thanks to the note about this issue being firmware, I took apart the brand-new drive (it seems you have to destroy the enclosure to do so) and put the drive in a different enclosure I had here. ubuntu now says there are still 2 extra "unknown" partitions that it can not get rid of. When I try to, it says they are busy, but they are really, really small.
this is the last HP product I will ever buy.
I hope someone from HP is reading this forum and gets the message, but I'm not likely to see it as I'm just posting here in hopes this info. will help other real people... unlikely to be here again.
HP, you should write on the box about the HP launcher being locked in... ya, you sold a drive to me, but you lost a possible future customer.

Hi, I read all the messages in this thread and tried to reformat my HP simple save 500gb portable according to instructions posted. However, everything failed. Now, I cannot access the drive via Finder. I can see it in Disk Utility but everytime I try to erase and reformat, the error message (Posix report: cannot allocate memory) pops up.
I am using Macbook Pro with Mac OS X 10.6.6.
Please help... I can no longer return the HP portable drive and unable to use it too...

I totally agree with borg4 (01-02-2011 08:01 PM).
HP, please don't impose something unremoveble on your products. Unless your clear about it in the product description or you want to treat your customers like if they are stupid.
So, that is not very helpful for the mac users, sorry about that. The drive would probably be usable on every platform if it didn' had this hard-coded thing on it in the first place.

I'm trying to set up My Simple save for my Mac (OS 10.6.7) I have succesfully backed up my files using Time Machine but each subsequent back up is the same as the last, it does not back up any new files. It's as if the simple Save is just backing up itself. Any sugestions othe than throwing it away!!!

Im a music producer that made a beat using my PC but then I then later purchased a MAC. Before I switched from the PC to MAC I used the HP SS and backed up everything I had on the PC. How can I restore everything I have on the HP SS to read on the MAC? If I reformat the HP SS as you stated, will I lose all of my info (songs)?
