Same here. My computer was "born on" Aug 13th, 2014, so today it's exactly only 2 months old.

Since Windows 8 was so sluggishly slow i decided i was going to wipe the drive and install Linux.

I had already been successful doing the exact same thing with a new HP laptop about 1 year ago.. it also was a Windows 8 preloaded machine, so i am very aware of the UEFI "Secure Boot" methodology and what it took to disable secure boot mode and enable legacy mode. I am happy to say that laptop ran Linux beautifully and without any issues.

So now, i have the HP AIO 19-2113w machine preloaded with Windows 8.1, which has been wiped. I have converted the GPT to MBR and attempted to disable secure boot mode and enable "legacy mode". The Legacy mode option says i must first disable secure boot mode, which i've done several times. (When restarting after doing so, i get a prompt to type in the 4 digits on the screen and press enter, which i've done several times now). Going back into bios after doing this... i STILL can't get past the "You must disable secure boot mode before using this option... blah blah.".

So i decided to look up if there were any lawsuits against Microsoft and/or HP reguarding UEFI bootloading issues, and there are.

Right now i am sitting on a 2 month old computer with NO operating system and no recovery partition. The money i spent on this computer could have gone towards a different brand, such as an Asus which has never given me trouble.

You guys need to contact me ASAP with a fix, or you'll get plenty of free negative advertising.

I have the exact same problem and I want a REAL solution !!!  I'm tired of having a brand new computer I can't even use. After all this mess I'm done with HP and I'll make sure any one I talk to is done with HP aswell. There's no reason we should be saddled with an inferior bios and and inferior operating system.

The solution was HP mailing me (at no charge) replacement DVD's to re-install the system to factory. Even after having done that and running a BIOS update utility from HP's website, i was still unable to resolve this issue and have been forced to stick with Windows 8.1 which i despise.

Because of this issue and the issues i have dealing with over the years with Microsoft related products and tactics my next computer will be a certified machine from Ubuntu Linux. This way i know for sure that the product i buy IS linux compatible. I bought this machine because of it's sleek design and it looks and fits in great with my home office and it had all the right specifications. The only issue i really have is that there is nothing documented anywhere that says i couldn't swap Windows 8.1 for a non-windows operating system.

So do we all get this "solution" ?? This is plain ridiculous, and I'll never purchase another HP computer, or and electronic device ever again. I'll make sure to pass the word on in every Ubuntu and mint forum I can.

Yeah, hardly a solution i know. Chances are though, you'll be contacted very soon by an HP rep who wants to do damage control and help you "fix" your problem. Best you got likely is at least restoring to factory and seeing if a newer bios update is available.

The major downside to selecting a linux certified machine is well, limited hardware options. I would rather pick among those products than to take chances again on any machine pre-installed with the Windows 8+ and using the microsoft influenced "EUFI" BIOS replacement/alternative.

I personally think that the big EUFI push was to help Microsoft gain a much stronger foothold in the PC market. There is a lot of ticked off Linux users out there who always found ways of making things work.. but suddenly are not able to because of issues like this.

I really wonder how many of the newer HP products are affected and if there will be any legal remedies?

Had I known it was going to be this big of a mess I would have kept my old gateway that has worked fine on Ubuntu even with its ancient hardware. I'm tired of being forced to use windows, and after this mess I'm tired of HP and any product they offer. I miss Ubuntu. Its to bad that more people don't know about the alternatives to windows and Apple. Its to bad we're all forced to use a inferior product, and its to bad we're always being lied to by the people who "know best".

LOL... i really think you need to be patient if you want them to reach out to you. They are ... how should i put this... very busy. 😉

I will be following this thread so please, any updates you have I will be watching. My business partner is now works for a computer retail and repair shop who is about to become a a key figurehead and can help people decide what their next computer will be. Many of those customers are Linux users who don't like Windows 8 but may like the hardware and Yes, Linux works well with these products fully in nearly all circumstances. However, it's the inability to re-enable "legacy support" after disabling or changing the secure boot option that really is the deal breaker if they know ahead of time. I am pretty sure we'll place a bulliten on the website and in the store to let people know about this issue with HP products.

Any updates you have, please share them here so others may also benefit from your knowledge in this experience. Thank you.

Lol patience is something I lost a few weeks ago when this dreadful experience started. I've spent countless hours trying every possible way or work around to make this computer take a different operating system. Who would've guessed our hands have been tied by the very people we were loyal to?? I thought America was about choice?? We are essentially being told what operating system we WILL you use, and HOW to use it.
