My "solution" was to buy the reinstall DVDs.  I didn't feel like talking with the support people (too angry), so I just ponied up and payed.  I was able to use the machine for work-related purposes (I needed to test software on a Windows machine), so it hasn't been a total loss.

I blew a weekend trying to solve a problem that wasn't solveable.  There should be a big disclaimer on these types of "Windows only" computers stating that other operating systems won't work on them.

Windows and HP are no better than Apple at this point in my eyes.

I ended up buying the reinstall DVDs, and using the Windows OS as a test bed for software I was developing at work.  So it wasn't a total loss for me, thankfully.

Yes, HP seems to always do things that irritate customers.

I bought the computer with my hard earned money, to use how I seen fit!! I used it for 2 hours, before I couldn't stand it any longer, and that's when this nightmare started. I wanted to use it for a test bed of my enjoyment , but I'm not permitted by HP or windblows.

Hi @mcchinsy , @porsche966gt3 ,

I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publically post ( serial numbers and case details).

If you are unfamiliar with how the Forum's private message capability works, you can learn about that here.

George

My HP19 will boot to Windows after it sits for awhile with the power off. Having all the same issues as everyone else. I was able to reset to factory but the hardware test indicates there's a hard drive problem. It hangs up whenever I click on an icon then error message stating it "encountered a problem and needs to shut down" then it goes thru the same process of not finding a boot device. So. where do I get a recovery cd and how do I use it after replacing the hard drive if I can't access the legacy devices?

Let me explain my exact scenario and how it's been "resolved". (Not technically resolved, because i'm still stuck using Windows 8.1 on this machine and not Linux like i wanted.)

So i bought this computer recently from Walmart and i figured it's form factor as an All-in-one profile would be a great fit for my radio station desk, which is an odd desk. I have also recently purchased an HP laptop as well. I was successfull in wiping Windows 8.1 from the laptop and installing Ubuntu Linux .. that was not a problem after learning things are different now with that new EUFI (bios replacement) thing that is at the root of the problem here.

However, i was not able to due the same with my HP All in One 19-2013w, as the EUFI menus don't actually let a person enable the "Legacy Boot" option after disabling the "Secure Boot" method, as describe in various documents relating to installing alternative operating systems. As it turns out, this is a greyed out option or unselectable and i am not the only person with this issue. Not being able to turn on the legacy boot option under the newer EUFI system means i cannot successfully complete the Linux install and boot into Linux. (Please note, Ubuntu Live CD works perfect, all my device drivers are picked up.. eveything works very nicely, so it's not like Linix won't work with this machine.)

I have a lot of experience in replacing Windows with Linux and so this was the first time i have come acrossed this issue. I didn't create a restore dvd set using the built-in tools in Windows or HP's bundled software tools. I didn't think i needed it.. because guess what, i don't need Windows.. i need Linux for what i do.

Anyway, after doing homework i came across two other people with the exact same problem on the exact same make and model machine. I decided to chime in as well here on this forum at HP. HP then contacted me i think within 24 hours wishing to assist me in resolving this issue.

Unfortunately, they could not resolve the issue, but they were able to at least let me try and re-install my machine back to factory Windows 8.1 using a DVD set they offered to send me at no charge. While this DVD set worked flawlessly to get my machine back up and running to factory default, i was unable to get any successful BIOS update that would fix my "Legacy Boot" option issue. So basically, this machine is currently locked to Windows 8.1 and quite frankly, i think this was by design between Microsoft and HP... since at this point i believe it is a conspiracy.

So HP should at least let people get the DVD set for restoring to factory, at minimum and to be notified when a EUFI software update (BIOS update) is available that corrects this issue so that us Linux users can use the operating systems we want or need to use.

I have to buy a second computer last week to get my station back on the air. My Windows 8.1 machine in question here is now just an internet browser / email machine. What a joke.

So here's two things that come out of my experience:

1.) That HP will mail you a DVD set to get you back to a factory OS installed machine, free of charge because of this issue, but you may need to ask for it. Please let me know if they do not provide this for you.

2.) That HP needs to roll out a BOIS update that corrects this issue and let us know here on this forum (and possibly via email), so that we can move foward to switching to or dual booting into Linux.

I hope this helps. Let me know if i can be of any further assistance.
