Hi, mekudi:
See if installing the chipset driver installs the ethernet adapter for you.

Hi,
First my appologies, because I am a complete computer nitwit, so I might say some stupid things in here.
Because of some sort of computer crash, I had to format my harddrive for a computer that is conected to an analytical machine. I re-installed windows and some drivers (printer etc.), and everything was functioning again. Except for the machine that was connected to the computer. The message that appeared was that there was no ethernet connection. I think that a driver is missing. I found out that the ethernet card is called 3Com EtherLink XL 10/100 PCI for complete PC Management NIC (3C905C-TX). How can I assure that the ethernet connection is re-established?
By the way, I don't have an internet connection on the described computer, so if I need to download a driver, I will have to do that on USB stick and bring it to the computer. Is that a problem?
I hope someone can help me!

Hi, Sea2012:
Welcome to the HP Consumer Support Forum.
You can't be a nitwit, because you had enough sense to come here and look for help.
I am glad you know the model of the network adapter that needs a driver but what model PC and operating system are you running?
Based on that old model network card, I will assume XP.
So, below is the link to the XP driver for that model network adapter pulled from a random HP desktop PC.
Your proposed solution to install the driver when there is no network connectivity, is also a testament that you are just being humble about your PC knowledge.

Hi Paul,
Thanks for the quick help! You certainly aren't a nitwit!:smileywink:
But to be honest, it didn't solve my problem (maybe because I AM a nitwit!). I had some problems getting it installed and when I looked a little bit more accurate it seemed to me that this was for Windows 95, 98, NT and 2000.
I use Windows XP (like you already thought). Is this possible, or is this a stupid idea??

You're very welcome.
The title of the driver indicates it is for W2K and XP.
I think that it must need to be installed the old fashioned way. Even though there is an executable, you have to manually install the driver files.
So...I have found a link to another version of the driver which is a much smaller file size.
Download the file from the above link and copy the file from your flash drive to the My Documents folder on your PC, then run the file.
It should extract to the My Documents folder and you should now see 3 items, a disk 1 folder, a disk 2 folder and a what's new word document.
Here is what you need to do to get the driver to install...
Step 1 | Click on the ethernet controller with the little yellow ? mark in the device manager. |
Step 2 | Then click on the Driver tab. |
Step 3 |
|
| Click Update Driver to launch the hardware update wizard. |
| Select “Install from a specified location” then click Next. |
| Select “Don’t search. I will choose the driver to install” then click Next. |
| Click Have Disk, then browse to locate the Disk1 directory of the new driver. Click OK |
| Click Next and the driver will be installed. |
| Click Finish to complete. |

Hi Paul,
Thanks again for your help!
But unfortunately it still doesn't work.:smileysad:
I tried to install the driver the way you described, but I struggled with the Have Disk part. I locate the Disk 1 directory, but then a message pops up: "The specified location does not contain information about your hardware", which makes it impossible for me to complete the installation.
I'm sorry to keep bothering you, but you are kind of my last hope! Sorry!!!!
