Does your laptop battery charge only when the laptop is turned off? Click here to view the solution

Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello i need some advice, i had a broken HP laptop which wasn't turning on but the LED charger light was coming on and charging the battery when i added the ac charger into the charging port,

Firstly i checked the voltage with my multimeter and it was fine 19.5v was going through, than i started to check different parts aswell, now the mistake was i accidentally switched my multimeter into diode mode by mistake and added one pin to the charger port pin and the other pin onto the opposite red wire on the motherboard port, when i noticed it was on diode mode i quickly stopped but when i switched the multimeter into the right place i noticed the LED charging light stopped to work and will not switch on or charge the battery anymore, has this got anything to do about adding the diode mode pin on to the charger pin while it was connected to the laptop???

I can imagine how worrying it must feel when the charging light that once glowed reassuringly suddenly goes dark after testing.

From what you described, it’s quite possible that when the multimeter was on diode mode and touched across the charging pins, a short could have occurred. This may have damaged part of the charging circuit on the motherboard, which is why the LED no longer lights up and the battery isn’t charging.

A couple of quick checks you might try:

  • Does the adapter still power on another compatible device, or show correct voltage under no load?

  • With the battery removed, does the laptop react in any way (fan spin, LED blink, etc.) when you press power?

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
