Hello,

I have the i9/4060 model of this laptop. It has always run hard and hot, I think the cooler is probably underpowered for the system. I invested in a cooling pad for it and it has so far worked well. I took a BIOS update last week through windows update, and it must have changed power delivery settings to make the system more conservative with its power draw.

When I play a game now, the system will perform as expected until about 5 or so minutes, where the CPU will downclock to what I am assuming its minimum running clock speed is which is 400MHz. Every time, the exact same clock speed. This creates unusably slow performance in game until after 3 minutes or so it allows itself to get back up to around 2GHz. I have HP command center, and put it in performance mode to try to over-rule the firmware but to no avail.

I need immediate resolution, because this update has essentially bricked a $2,500 laptop.

Hi @Kurse2000,

Thank you for sharing the details.

Kindly follow the steps below:

Rollback BIOS: Use HP’s BIOS recovery tool (F10 at boot → BIOS Management → Rollback) to revert to the previous stable version.

HP Support Assistant: Check for a newer BIOS release—HP often issues hotfixes after widespread complaints. HP Support Assistant | HP® Support.

Advanced Power Settings: In Windows Control Panel → Power Options, set processor minimum state to 5% and maximum to 100%. This sometimes overrides aggressive firmware throttling.

Manual Fan Control: Third-party tools (if compatible) can force higher fan speeds to delay throttling.

Cooling Pad: You already use one, but ensure it’s high-CFM and properly aligned with intake vents.

I hope this will help.

Take care and have a good day.

When I go into the BIOS with F10 I have no recovery option available to me. The user level control on the BIOS is very limited, things like virtualization, secure boot, and boot order. I have no power settings available to me, or anything else.

I checked the support page for this model laptop and I see that the BIOS I am on, F.26 is the latest.

In the advanced power settings, the CPU minimum & maximum states were already set to 5% & 10%

The cooling pad I am using is a razer cooling pad that has a foam seal to force air through the chassis of the laptop and I have been meticulous to make sure the intake is aligned and the ventilation holes are not blocked by the foam seal.

Recommended Next Steps:

Try the hidden key combinations (Ctrl + F10, Ctrl + A) in BIOS.

If unavailable, consider downgrading to BIOS F.12 for restored functionality.

Use Windows power management to fine-tune CPU states and cooling.

Keep your cooling pad aligned and ensure internal fans are clean.

Those key combinations did not do anything. Can you walk me through how to perform a BIOS downgrade?

Any of the old BIOS revisions I attempt to download from that page state "this Bios is not compatible with this device". It appears as if a BIOS downgrade is impossible.
