OMEN by HP 16.1 inch Gaming Laptop PC 16-xf0000 IDS Base Model

Hi folks,

I'm having some issues with an HP Omen 16 laptop where if I have the GPU mode as hybrid and I restart the laptop, I am stuck on a blank screen with everything seemingly working (fans, keyboard light, ect).  Before it loads Windows 11, I do see the OMEN logo before going to the black screen which makes me think it's a software issue as opposed to a hardware issue.  If I have the laptop in discrete mode, I don't have the same issue.  The only way I have been able to fix this is I close the lid and open it back up which brings back up Windows properly.  Not a big deal to do this every time I restart but it's a strange issue to have popped up randomly.  Has anyone else experienced this issue and have a fix?

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling both Nvidia's gpu drivers and AMD's adrenaline software/drivers, rolling back to old restore points and so far no fix.  I also have a separate issue where I'm only able to select 60hz or 240hz refresh rates on my built in display.  Previously I had options for dynamic 60/144, dynamic 144/240hz and standard 144hz.  Maybe these issues are connected somehow?

Appreciate any advice I can get!

Hi @Whistler879,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you've already done quite a bit of troubleshooting, but let's try to narrow down the issue further. Since the problem seems to occur specifically when using the hybrid GPU mode, it's likely related to the switching mechanism between the integrated and discrete GPUs.

Here are a few additional steps you could try:

  • Update BIOS/UEFI: Ensure that your laptop's BIOS or UEFI firmware is up to date. Sometimes, firmware updates can address compatibility issues with hardware components.
  • Reset BIOS/UEFI Settings: Try resetting the BIOS/UEFI settings to their default values. There might be a setting that's causing conflicts with the hybrid GPU mode.
  • Check for System Updates: Make sure your Windows 11 installation is fully up to date. Sometimes, system updates include fixes for hardware compatibility issues.

Regarding the refresh rate issue, it's possible that it's related to the GPU driver or the display settings. Since you've already tried reinstalling the GPU drivers, you could also try the following:

  • Check Display Settings: Navigate to the display settings in Windows and see if there are any options for customizing the refresh rate. Sometimes, certain refresh rate options may be hidden or disabled based on the connected display.
  • Driver Reinstallation: Completely uninstall both the Nvidia and AMD GPU drivers using a tool like DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) to ensure a clean removal, then reinstall the latest drivers from the official websites.
  • Monitor Driver Update: If your laptop's built-in display has a specific driver, ensure that it's up to date. You can usually find this in the Device Manager under "Monitors".

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks for the reply!

The issue with the hybrid GPU seems to have fixed itself.  I"m unsure what happened there.

However, with the refresh rate issue, I've tried looking at the display settings, using DDU to uninstall and reinstalled the drivers and that didn't seem to fix the issue.  With the monitor driver, do you know what driver that would be?  Windows currently lists it as "Generic PnP monitor"

Hi @Whistler879,

Thank you for your response,

It's great to hear that the issue with the hybrid GPU has resolved itself. As for the refresh rate problem, the "Generic PnP Monitor" listing indicates that Windows is using a generic driver for your monitor, which may not provide all the features and settings specific to your display.

To resolve this, you'll want to install the correct monitor driver. Here's how you can do it.

  • Identify Your Monitor Model: Find out the specific model of your monitor. This information is usually available on the back of the monitor or in the documentation that came with it. You can also sometimes find it in the monitor's settings menu.
  • Download the Driver: Visit our HP website and look for the support or downloads section. Search for your monitor model and download the appropriate driver for your operating system.
  • Install the Driver: Once downloaded, run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions to install the driver. After installation, Windows should recognize your monitor correctly, and you may gain access to additional settings, including refresh rates.

If you're unable to find a specific driver for your monitor, you can try letting Windows search for the driver automatically.

  1. Right-click on "Generic PnP Monitor" in Device Manager.
  2. Select "Update driver" from the context menu.
  3. Choose the option to search automatically for updated driver software.
  4. Windows will then search for and install the appropriate driver if it's available online.

After installing or updating the monitor driver, restart your computer and check if the refresh rate issue has been resolved. If not, there may be other factors at play, such as compatibility issues or hardware limitations.

Take care and have a great day ahead!
