OMEN Laptop - 15-ek0013dx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I've had this issue for a while now, and it is starting to concern me. The CPU temperature reported in the Omen Gaming constantly fluctuates, showing a different value every second. This always happens, but it gets much worse when I am doing a CPU-intensive task, such as gaming.

Here's a video of it happening. It goes as low as 54 and as high as 72.

Temperature going crazy - YouTube

It is not necessarily overheating, but I worry that the computer might not be accurately sensing the temperature, which I think could be harmful. Is this behavior normal? Any suggestions what could be causing it?

My system has the latest BIOS, Windows update, and NVIDIA graphics drivers.

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, I have a few troubleshooting steps we could try to fix the issue:

  • Shut down the computer, and then inspect and clean the exterior vents to remove dust buildup by blowing air through the vent openings. Dust can accumulate inside the vent openings and around internal cooling components, preventing the removal of heat.

For more information on reducing heat inside your computer, see Reducing Heat Inside the PC.

  • After you remove the dust, turn on the computer. If the error message persists, continue with these steps.
  • Perform a hard reset. Performing a hard reset can reset recorded thermal values in memory and enable you to use the computer again, even if only for a short time to access and save any important files before service.

For more information on performing a hard reset, see Use Hard Reset to Resolve Hardware and Software Issues.

  • In some cases, updating the BIOS might help prevent this error from occurring. For more information on how to update the BIOS, see Updating the BIOS. (Do not skip any troubleshooting steps even if you feel steps are repeating)

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Thanks for getting back to me. I performed all those steps. The vent openings looked fine, but I blew compressed air through them anyway. I also did a hard reset, and my BIOS is already on the latest version. But I'm still seeing the temperature go up and down.

I'll repeat that the laptop is not overheating (as far as I can tell), and it is working fine for all normal operations, but the temperature reading constantly bounces up and down. This might just be the way temperature sensors work, but I don't remember it doing this out of the box. Also it might be worth noting that the GPU temperature is perfectly stable; it's only the CPU temperature that fluctuates.

Thank you for posting back.

I appreciate your efforts to try and resolve the issue.

The last thing I can suggest try and restore the OS back to the factory default, which will isolate whether it’s a software or hardware issue.  The HP Cloud Recovery Tool allows you to download recovery software to a USB drive. You can use the downloaded recovery image file in order to install the Windows operating system.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.
