I have an HP Omen 15-dh0000nx and recently the CPU started throttling, causing FPS drops every 1-2 seconds while gaming. This is happening in the same games I used to play for the many years I had the laptop, so I'm not sure why it's happening. If someone can help me diagnose the issue and find the solution, that would be appreciated.

Hi @suadi_,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
When your HP Omen 15-dh0000nx starts throttling the CPU and experiencing FPS drops, especially when it didn’t have these issues before, it can be due to several factors. Here's a detailed approach to diagnose and resolve the throttling problem:
1. Check Temperature and Cooling
- Monitor Temperatures: Use a tool like HWMonitor, MSI Afterburner, or SpeedFan to monitor CPU and GPU temperatures while gaming. Overheating can cause throttling.
- Clean Vents and Fans: Dust buildup can obstruct airflow and cause overheating. Ensure the laptop’s vents and fans are clean. You might need to use compressed air to blow out dust from the vents.
2. Inspect Thermal Paste
- Check Thermal Paste: If the laptop is old, the thermal paste between the CPU and the heatsink might have dried out or degraded. Reapplying thermal paste can improve heat dissipation.
- Professional Cleaning: If you’re not comfortable doing this yourself, consider having a professional technician clean and reapply thermal paste.
3. Adjust Power Settings
- Windows Power Settings: Ensure that your laptop’s power plan is set to High Performance:
- Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
- Select High Performance.
- HP Omen Command Center: Check if there are any performance or cooling settings in the HP Omen Command Center or HP Support Assistant that might affect CPU performance.
4. Update Drivers and BIOS
- Update Drivers: Ensure all your drivers, particularly the graphics drivers and chipset drivers, are up to date. Visit the HP website or the manufacturers’ sites (e.g., NVIDIA or AMD) for the latest drivers.
- BIOS Update: Check for any BIOS updates available for your laptop. Sometimes BIOS updates can address thermal and power management issues.
5. Check for Background Processes
- Task Manager: Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and check if there are any background processes consuming excessive CPU resources. End unnecessary tasks to free up resources for gaming.
- Startup Programs: Disable unnecessary startup programs that might be running in the background and affecting performance.
6. Verify Power Supply
- Charger and Battery: Ensure that you’re using the correct power adapter for your laptop and that the battery is functioning properly. Inadequate power supply can affect performance.
7. Check for Thermal Throttling
- ThrottleStop or Intel XTU: Use tools like ThrottleStop or Intel Extreme Tuning Utility (XTU) to check if the CPU is being throttled due to high temperatures or power limits.
- Adjust Settings: You might be able to adjust settings to prevent throttling, but proceed with caution and ensure you’re not causing other stability issues.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
