Recently bought an Omen Max 16 RTX 5080 and whenever I play games, the temps reach 99c consistently (spikes at 102c here and there) and was wondering if this is normal for Intel Ultra 9 275HX CPUs. I verified that Balanced can be taken out of the question but it still stays at 88c on average and drastically hampers CPU performance. No matter how I configure Performance and Unleashed they seem to consistently spike to 99c always. Even reinstalling the most recent BIOS and recovery.

Hi @Mich771,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
Thank you for reaching out and providing detailed information about the high CPU temperatures observed on your OMEN MAX 16 (16-ah0000) Gaming Laptop featuring the Intel® Core™ Ultra 9 275HX processor and NVIDIA® RTX 5080 graphics.
We understand your concern, and we’re here to help. Based on your report, your system reaches 99–102°C under gaming loads and maintains 88°C even under less intense performance profiles. While short spikes toward the upper 90s can be expected under full load, sustained temperatures at or above 99°C are outside expected behaviour and can lead to thermal throttling, which negatively affects performance.
Steps to Try:
1. Update OMEN Gaming Hub and Set Manual Fan Control
- Launch OMEN Gaming Hub > Navigate to Performance Control > Thermal Control.
- Select “Manual” and set the fan curve to maximum for CPU and GPU when under load.
- Save and apply changes, then monitor in-game temperatures.
2. Ensure BIOS and Drivers Are Fully Up to Date
- Visit HP Software and Driver Downloads: OMEN MAX 16 inch Gaming Laptop PC 16-ah0000 (A4NN9AV) Software and Driver Downloads | HP® Support
- Ensure the following are up to date:
- BIOS firmware
- Embedded Controller (EC) Firmware, if available
- Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework
- OMEN Gaming Hub SDK Package
3. Optimize Power and Performance Settings
- In OMEN Gaming Hub, under Performance Control, choose Performance or Balanced, then try "Default" or "Custom" fan profiles.
- Avoid the “Unleashed” profile unless additional cooling (like a cooling pad) is being used.
- In Windows Power Settings, ensure that the CPU minimum processor state is not locked at 100%.
4. Improve Cooling with Environment Adjustments
- Ensure your system is used on a hard, flat surface.
- Consider using a cooling pad or elevating the rear of the laptop slightly to enhance airflow.
5. Run HP Diagnostics for Thermals
- Turn off your system, then turn it on and immediately press Esc > then F2 to launch HP Hardware Diagnostics.
- Run the System Thermal Test and report results.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Thanks for responding Vikram! yes I already did all these steps before I submitted this inquiry. Unfortunately, all tests point to an issue on the thermal paste on the CPU. I’ve already submitted an RMA request
