Recently I decided to download the HP Support Assistent onto my laptop, so I could get my laptop all up to date with software. It's older now but still runs games like GTA 5 or Assassin's Creed Origins on lower settings and with no issues at all.

Before I started updating the software that i could via the progra m, I was playing the first Dishonored with a Microsoft controller with no issues.

Since the updates I have run into a really annoying issue. Occasionally while playing Dishonord my laptop screen will go black and it goes to sleep. Apon waking I am able to continue fine but this issue is really annoying, It can happen after 20 minutes of game time or sometimes barely a minute after waking it back up. And on the really rare occasion the  shutting down screen pops up and that's it.

I have no idea what the issue may be, seeming that this is an older game and it ran perfectly fine on other much more taxing games and before updating as well. I started using a cooling table to see if that will help but it has had no effect. The sleeping and shutting down has only happened while playing this; no issues while browsing the internet or anything else. I've checked all power settings and followed advice found online to turn off all sleeping setting while my laptop is plugged in (it always is when I am gaming). Any clues as to how I can fix this?

So I took my computer into a specialist, there were large deposits of dust on the motherboard and the thermopaste had all but dried out and disappeared. These have all been sorted, leaving my laptop running at a comfortable 45 degrees and with no issues so far! Thanks all for the advice 🙂

No such luck, I have tried everything you suggested and the issue still persists. I have updated my laptop recently with the most recent HP software. I have discovered the issue is happening on every game I own; games that I have never previously had any problems with at all. And it only occurs on games too, chrome and other such programs have had no impact.

As a clarification my laptop is always plugged into the power, so that isn't the issue. I am using a cooling pad, so it can't be heat (especially as these games used to run fine even without the cooling pad).  I have updated absolutely everything I can and have been suggested to. Seems to be a bit of a common issue across the internet, but no answer or solution ever comes up.

@Latch_Protect,

It looks like you were interacting with @A4Apollo, but he is out for the day & I'll be glad to help you out,
I'm the Jeet_Singh & I'm at your service.

After reviewing your post thoroughly, I see that you have followed the steps suggested and nothing has helped to resolve this issue.

Just wanted to check if you have run an extensive system test from F2(Please capture the failure ID for further assistance).

If the test passes, I would suggest the next step would be to perform a system reset on the PC.

For more details, please follow the steps from this link: HP PCs - Resetting Your Computer (Windows 10)

Hope this answers your question.

Good luck and keep me posted about the developments. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue and give the post a Kudos for my efforts to help. Thank you and have a great week ahead. 🙂

I completed both the extensive and fast checks last night with no errors being found. Looks like I'll either have to deal with it or go for the reset. Thanks anyway!

@Latch_Protect,

Thank you for replying,

As I understand you have run the test and it passed without any errors, In this scenario, this looks like a software related issue.

I would suggest you take your time and do a system reset on the PC and get back to us with the results.

I'll be awaiting your response and would be glad to help.

Feel free to post your query for any other assistance as well,
It's been a pleasure interacting with you and I hope you have a good day ahead.

I tried a system reboot; so reinstalling windows 10 over the current version without wiping my files and programs. That hasn't solved anything, so the next step will be the full reset and hopefully, it will do the trick! I'll be sure to keep you posted.

It was asked above what your temperatures are when the sleep issue occurs but you didnt post an answer.

Have you been monitoring the temps when gaming?

If you dont know how, download a tool like HWMonitor and run it while gaming. Tell us what your cpu temps are when you are playing a game and it goes to sleep.

Reinstalling the OS wont help if you're overheating.

HP Recommended

My cpu hit 103 degrees and graphics card hit 91 degrees before my laptop went to sleep.  Idling (spotify, chrome watching videos etc) is around cpu at 83 degrees and graphics card at 64 degrees with no issues at all. This is with using a cooling fan as well. What can I do to resolve this? Before I ran those updates my laptop was fine with those temperatures (I have felt it much hotter to the touch many times before) but now it seems to be playing a part? Is there anything i can do? Cheers

If your cpu is hitting 103, no wonder its shutting off. Thats WAY TOO HOT. Have you tried cleaning the vents out with canned air or such? Make sure the vents are not blocked while in use?

What programs are also running besides the games? Look in the Task Manager to see whats eating up CPU.
