HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop - 17-cd1013na
Linux

I bought a Pavilion 17-cd1013na Gaming Laptop last year. It works OK for the most part, it runs cool and quiet when I'm not playing any games. However, when I play graphically intensive games like GTA 5 and Cyberpunk it gets really hot. Like so hot it's painful to touch. I measured 85 degrees celcius once, after 15 minutes of gameplay. It should NOT be that hot. I've been having this issue since day one. I tried cleaning the vents and applying new thermal paste, but it made zero difference. The fans are too small, and the vents are too small, especially for a beast like the 1660 Ti. If I could at least increase the fan speed then it wouldn't bee so bad. I don't care if it's louder. But there's no options in the BIOS, and none of the WIndows or Linux utilities work. I've heard the fans spinning at full speed when performing a BIOS update, yet they're barely audible when the system is LITERALLY BURNING TO DEATH. By the way, did you know the latest BIOS update is 5 months old?

The ACPI implementation is broken. Not only can I not interact with the cooling fans, but I have other problems too:

  • Half of my hotkeys don't work under Linux (I've tried different distros and I get the same problem)
  • No thermal sensors are detected. All I can see it the GPU's thermal sensor in Nvidia control panel
  • On WIndows, touching the touchpad lights up the keyboard. On Linux or any other OS you have to press a key.

Other issues (non-ACPI related):

  • No option to have keyboard backlight always on
  • Keyboard backlight is off after the battery runs out

I'd like to talk about some of the questionable hardware design choices as well, but I'm here to talk about software. HOW HARD CAN IT BE TO ADD FAN CONTROLS TO THE BIOS SETTINGS. Please get one of the devs to add this in a future BIOS update. I can look past all the other issues, but I can't have my laptop running this hot. I'm a game dev student with very little money so I cannot afford a new laptop if this one burns out.
