OMEN MAX 16 inch Gaming Laptop PC 16-ah0000 (A4TV6AV)

My HP Omen Max 16 gaming laptop seems to always have the fans spinning at around 1900 RPM, even when it's in low power mode or when I disable the NVIDIA GPU. The thing is, 1900 RPM makes quite a bit of noise, and it's really noticeable in quiet environments like a library.

I tried using FanControl software, but it doesn’t seem to detect the fans at all. Is there any way I can make the fans spin slower or stop completely at low temperatures? Or is this just locked down by HP?

Any help would be appreciated.

@User199721, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding HP Omen laptops

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

BIOS Update and Configuration: Ensure that you have the latest BIOS installed on your laptop. HP frequently releases updates that can optimize system performance, including fan speed management. You can check for updates through the HP Support Assistant or HP's official website.

OMEN Gaming Hub: Use the OMEN Gaming Hub software, which comes pre-installed on your Omen laptop. It allows you to control various aspects of your laptop, including performance and cooling settings. Check if there are options to set a quieter profile or adjust the fan settings.

Power Management Settings: Adjust your Windows Power Plan settings to a balanced or power saver mode, which might reduce CPU usage and consequently fan activity. You can do this by going to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options.

NVIDIA Control Panel: Ensure that the integrated GPU is prioritized over the dedicated GPU for less intensive tasks. This can reduce power and thermal output, potentially decreasing the need for higher fan speeds.

Thermal Management Considerations: Ensure your laptop is placed on a hard, flat surface to maintain optimal airflow. Using a cooling pad can also help reduce temperatures and fan activity.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!

What I’ve already done

  • Updated BIOS to the latest version via HP Support Assistant.
  • Checked OMEN Gaming Hub and set all quieter/eco profiles available.
  • Switched Windows to Balanced / Power Saver power plans.
  • Prioritised the integrated GPU / disabled the NVIDIA dGPU where possible.
  • Placed the laptop on a hard flat surface and used a cooling pad.
  • Tried third-party FanControl, it does not detect any fans on this machine.

Current behaviour

At idle/low load the fans sit at 1900 RPM and are audible in quiet places. They do not drop below 1900 RPM even when temperatures are low.

Questions

  1. Can you confirm whether this model has a firmware/EC or BIOS-enforced minimum fan speed?
  2. Is there any known interaction with RTX 50-series GPUs that would force a minimum fan speed (I’ve seen a few forum claims but haven’t found an official source)?
  3. If the minimum fan speed is configurable, could you please provide steps or an official tool/firmware update to change the fan curve or enable a quieter/fan-stopped idle mode.
  4. If it’s intentional and not configurable, can you explain why it’s set to 1900 RPM and whether there’s an option (firmware update / service) to make it quieter?

Thanks in advance

@User199721, The persistent 1900 RPM fan speed on your HP Omen Max 16 gaming laptop, even under low load or with the NVIDIA GPU disabled, suggests that HP has implemented a firmware-enforced minimum fan speed. This design choice likely aims to ensure consistent cooling and prevent thermal throttling, especially during extended gaming sessions.

Understanding the Fan Control Mechanism

HP's OMEN Gaming Hub provides users with the ability to adjust performance and cooling settings. However, some users have reported that manual fan speed adjustments are either ignored or overridden by the BIOS, particularly when the GPU temperature exceeds certain thresholds. This indicates that the BIOS may enforce a minimum fan speed to maintain optimal thermal conditions.

Possible Solutions and Workarounds

Check for BIOS Updates: Ensure your BIOS is up to date, as HP occasionally releases updates that can optimize system performance and fan control.

Adjust Power Settings: Switching to a balanced or power saver power plan in Windows can reduce CPU usage, potentially leading to lower fan speeds.

Use OMEN Gaming Hub: Explore the "Unleashed" performance profile in OMEN Gaming Hub, which offers granular controls for overclocking, CPU calibration, and fan speeds. This may provide more flexibility in managing fan behavior.

Optimize Cooling Environment: Ensure your laptop is placed on a hard, flat surface to maintain optimal airflow. Using a cooling pad can also help reduce temperatures and potentially lower fan speeds.

Conclusion

While the 1900 RPM fan speed may seem high, it is likely a design choice by HP to ensure consistent cooling performance. Currently, there are no official tools or firmware updates that allow users to configure the fan curve or enable a fan-stopped idle mode. HP has not provided an option to adjust the minimum fan speed below this threshold.

I am having the same issue.

The Omen Max 16 with AMD runs really cool (even cooler than the Transcend 14 of my brother) and in the BIOS there clearly is an option to turn off "fans always on" but it simply doesnt seem to work as the fans are always at 1900rpm no matter what and it is really annoying.

Like yeah, I get it. When it is on high-performance mode give it full blast of fans but when just doing office work or idle, there simply is no need for the fans and you even provide the option in the BIOS, it simply does not seem to work unfortunately. I'd be really glad if you could escalate/pass this information on the the technical department.

Thanks a lot and have a great day!

Can you please escalate this to the technical/engineering department to allow a lower minimum fan speed (for example, allow Unleashed to go below 31%, allow fan idle when the NVIDIA GPU is disabled, or let Eco mode drop below 1900 RPM).

Thank you.
