Is the 17-w230nb in the same series, so can I upgrade to 32 gb too? The 'experts' say I can only put in 16gb, but the crucial website says 32gb...

Yes you can upgrade to 32GB.

HP was being conservative and only tested the series up to 16 GB, thus why they only recommend 16.

The system will handle if just fine.

go fro what the crucial website says... i am writing you know from my 32gb ram laptop that the hp guys here say it can take 32gb ram:)
