Common problems for INSTANT INK, HP+ PLANS: INK AND TONER
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about Instant Ink. Check out this link: HP INSTANT INK, HP+ PLANS: INK AND TONER. .

I really don't print much and generally use the scanner but during a spell I needed to print a lot of stuff off so upgraded my plan from 10 pages (99p per month) to 50 pages (about £4?).

Of course subscriptions being subscriptions I completely forgot and carried on paying the higher rate when I didn't need it - my mistake.

However now I'm changing it back to 10 I'm being told that I still need to pay for my next payment cycle at the higher 50 page rate. Why? As I understand the payments aren't to cover the month past but the forthcoming period so why can't it change at the start of my next payment cycle?

Hi @RobBobDob.,

I understand you changed your HP Instant Ink plan back to a lower tier but are still being charged the higher rate for the next billing cycle. Let’s go through a few points to explain why this happens and how Instant Ink billing works.

How Instant Ink billing cycles work
Instant Ink is billed at the start of each billing cycle, not at the end.
Once a new cycle begins, that month’s plan is already active and chargeable.

When plan changes take effect
Downgrades (like 50 pages back to 10 pages) do not take effect immediately.
They are scheduled to apply at the start of the following billing cycle.

Why you’re still seeing the higher charge
If the downgrade was made after the current cycle already started,
the system keeps the existing plan for the rest of that cycle.

Difference between upgrades and downgrades
Upgrades apply immediately so you can print more right away.
Downgrades are delayed to prevent users from printing heavily, then instantly paying less.

What the next charge actually covers
The charge you’re seeing covers the upcoming cycle under the currently active plan.
Your 10-page plan will begin on the next renewal after that cycle completes.

Confirm the effective date of the downgrade
Log in to your Instant Ink account and check Plan Details.
It will show the exact date the lower plan becomes active.

No impact on scanning or printer functionality
Instant Ink billing only applies to printed pages.
Scanning and copying are not affected by the plan level.

Avoiding this in the future
Set a reminder to review your plan before the billing date.
Plan changes made before the renewal date apply to the very next cycle.

Important policy clarification
This behavior is by design and stated in Instant Ink terms.
It is not an error or double billing.

What will happen going forward
You will pay the higher rate one final time,
and then the plan will automatically switch to the 10-page tier.

In short, Instant Ink plan downgrades always take effect one billing cycle later, which is why you’re still charged at the higher rate for the upcoming month.

I hope this helps.
