HP OfficeJet 5255 All-in-One Printer

I have instant ink.  Have had it long time with same printer.  Never any issues.  Now error message appears saying it cannot print.  Connect to update HP instant ink status.  When try to connect it fails and says the printer could not connect to web services.  The server might be busy or temporarily unavailable.  Sometimes get a gateway error message as well.  My printer says it is connected to the internet with excellence strength.  My laptop also is connected to printer (wireless) and says its good/ready to print.  Issue is printer isnt connected to instant ink and therefore is stuck.  Wont even let me print let me print a wirless test report to see if error codes through that.  I have already tried many things to try fix issue.

1) Restart router and all devices - didnt work

2) Change ink cartigages - didnt work

3) Uninstall/re-install wireless internet on printer - didnt work

4) Used AI to manually configure - didnt work

5) Wanted to try to unhook printer from instant ink and it wont let me unless I cancel my subscription

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi @mzarbo,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can feel how frustrating this must be, especially when your HP OfficeJet 5255 has worked flawlessly with Instant Ink for so long. Let’s walk through a few steps to resolve the Web Services connection issue and get your printer back online.

1. Disconnect USB Cable (If Connected)

HP confirms that USB connections block Web Services and prevent Instant Ink from working. Make sure your printer is only connected via Wi-Fi.

2. Restart Everything in Order

Even if you've done this before, follow this exact sequence:

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  2. Restart your router (wait 30 seconds).
  3. Restart your PC or mobile device.
  4. Plug in and turn on the printer.
  5. Ensure the Wi-Fi light is solid blue on the printer.

3. Reset Web Services

This clears any stuck server connections:

  1. Open the Embedded Web Server (EWS):
    • Find your printer’s IP address via the control panel.
    • Enter it in a browser on your PC.
  2. Go to the Web Services tab.
  3. Click Remove Web Services or Reset Web Services.hp
  4. After reset, click Enable Web Services again.

If prompted for a PIN, use the one printed inside the cartridge access door.

4. Update Printer Firmware

Outdated firmware can block Instant Ink communication.

  • On the printer:
Setup > Printer Maintenance > Update Printer > Check Now
  • Or via the HP Smart app:
Advanced Settings > Printer Updates > Check Now

Do not turn off the printer during this update.

5. Check HP Smart Account Status

Sometimes the issue is with the account, not the printer.

  • Go to HP Smart Account
  • Sign in and check:
    • Printer status: Should say Ready to print with a green icon.
    • Instant Ink status: Should show Active.

If it says Not ready to print, try refreshing the page up to 5 times.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
