I installed a new HP 65 XL black cartridge on 4/20/25. I know this because I write the date on the top of the cartridge. As of yesterday (5/7/25), it is showing low ink for this cartridge. I have NOT printed very many pages! I am not sure if I purchased this cartridge from Walmart or from Amazon as I do use both so I am not sure where I can turn. It could be that I purchased a color/black combo pack a while ago (no more than 6 months ago) and I am now using the black that came in that pack. I use this ink in my HP Envy 5055 All-in-One printer.
Can you please help?

Hi @cynig,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
Thank you for reaching out regarding your HP ENVY 5055 All-in-One Printer and the HP 65XL black ink cartridge.
We understand how frustrating it can be to see a low ink alert shortly after installing a new cartridge, especially when printing volume has been minimal. Let's work together to resolve this.
Here are the steps:
- Check Cartridge Authenticity
Ensure that the cartridge is a genuine HP product. You can do this by visiting our HP Cartridge Authentication and scanning the QR code on the cartridge label or entering the code manually.
- Printer Firmware and Software Update
Make sure your printer has the latest firmware installed. Outdated firmware can sometimes cause ink level misreporting.- Visit HP Software & Driver Downloads and enter your model (HP ENVY 5055) to download updates.
- Visit HP Software & Driver Downloads and enter your model (HP ENVY 5055) to download updates.
- Perform a Hard Reset
Resetting the printer can refresh the ink level detection system.- Turn the printer ON.
- Disconnect the power cord from the back.
- Wait 60 seconds.
- Plug the power cord back in and turn it ON.
- Clean the Ink Cartridge Contacts
Debris or ink buildup on the contacts may cause misreads.- Turn off the printer and open the cartridge access door.
- Gently remove the black cartridge.
- Use a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water to clean the copper-colored contacts.
- Allow to dry fully and reinstall.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
