HP ENVY 5055 All-in-One Printer

I installed a new HP 65 XL black cartridge on 4/20/25.  I know this because I write the date on the top of the cartridge.  As of yesterday (5/7/25), it is showing low ink for this cartridge.  I have NOT printed very many pages!  I am not sure if I purchased this cartridge from Walmart or from Amazon as I do use both so I am not sure where I can turn.  It could be that I purchased a color/black combo pack a while ago (no more than 6 months ago) and I am now using the black that came in that pack.  I use this ink in my HP Envy 5055 All-in-One printer.

Can you please help?

Hi @cynig,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for reaching out regarding your HP ENVY 5055 All-in-One Printer and the HP 65XL black ink cartridge.

We understand how frustrating it can be to see a low ink alert shortly after installing a new cartridge, especially when printing volume has been minimal. Let's work together to resolve this.

Here are the steps:

  1. Check Cartridge Authenticity
Ensure that the cartridge is a genuine HP product. You can do this by visiting our HP Cartridge Authentication and scanning the QR code on the cartridge label or entering the code manually.

  2. Printer Firmware and Software Update
Make sure your printer has the latest firmware installed. Outdated firmware can sometimes cause ink level misreporting.
    • Visit HP Software & Driver Downloads and enter your model (HP ENVY 5055) to download updates.

  3. Perform a Hard Reset
Resetting the printer can refresh the ink level detection system.
    • Turn the printer ON.
    • Disconnect the power cord from the back.
    • Wait 60 seconds.
    • Plug the power cord back in and turn it ON.

  4. Clean the Ink Cartridge Contacts
Debris or ink buildup on the contacts may cause misreads.
    • Turn off the printer and open the cartridge access door.
    • Gently remove the black cartridge.
    • Use a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water to clean the copper-colored contacts.
    • Allow to dry fully and reinstall.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
