I have complained for a while now, and HP does not help with the issues.  I tried using  Instant Ink and the cartridges they sent did not fit the printer even though they sent the right number, it did not fit, 3 times, so I cancelled since I had to buy them at Target.  The color cartridges are not working properly. Black works fine and for a long time! I have done everything they said, I even signed up for a service contract and yet couldnt get it to work properly.  They kept blaming the cartridges, saying I needed to buy directly from them. of course.   I have ordered cartridges directly from HP, from Amazon, from Target and each time, I put them in its still not printing properly.  So when I run test pages, after 2 pages the color ink is almost half gone?? WHY?  The printer is less than two years old.  I had these issues with my last HP after years of it working great, so I figured it was old, but this one is having the same issues from the beginning.  So I only print in black and white.  So frustrated!

Hi @PeteSPF,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you've been dealing with quite a frustrating situation with your HP OfficeJet 8020 printer. Here are a few steps you can try to resolve the issue:

Troubleshooting Steps

Firmware Update:

  • Ensure that your printer's firmware is up-to-date. Hp often release updates to fix known issues, including those related to ink consumption and cartridge compatibility. You can check for updates on the HP website.

Cartridge Alignment and Cleaning:

  • Perform a cartridge alignment and cleaning. This can often resolve issues with improper printing. You can usually find these options in the printer’s settings menu under maintenance.

Use Genuine HP Cartridges:

  • Although you’ve tried this, it's worth emphasizing the importance of using genuine HP cartridges to avoid compatibility issues. Sometimes, even cartridges bought from third parties like Amazon can be counterfeit.

Check Cartridge Installation:

  • Double-check that the cartridges are installed correctly. Sometimes, improper installation can cause issues with the printer recognizing the cartridges or using ink inefficiently.

Printhead Cleaning:

  • Manually clean the printhead. Ink residue and dust can cause improper printing and excessive ink usage. Refer to your printer’s manual for instructions on how to do this safely.

Print Settings:

  • Adjust your print settings. Printing in draft mode or greyscale can save ink. Ensure that the settings are not defaulting to the highest quality, which uses more ink.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
