Advertised page yields on ink boxes assume an industry-standard 5% page coverage (just a few lines of text). Printing photos, heavy graphics, or full paragraphs uses significantly more ink, draining the cartridge much faster. Furthermore, up to half of your ink may be consumed through automatic printer maintenance and cleaning cycles.

Understanding how manufacturers define a "page" clarifies these quick depletions:

The "5% Coverage" Rule

• Standard Coverage: A 5% page equals about one short paragraph or a few bullet points on an 8.5 x 11 inch sheet.

• High Coverage: Printing an entire page of text or images can consume the same amount of ink as 10 to 20 standard pages, drastically dropping your total page count

Note that the 5% rule is a standard that all OEM manufacturers agree to. While you may disagree with the value of 5, at least that is a standard that allows valid comparisons. This video explains the problem

How to get more pages
Expand Spoiler

Spoiler
• Draft/Fast Mode: Change your printer settings in your computer's print menu to "Draft," "Fast," or "Grayscale" to use significantly less ink.

• High-Yield (XL) Cartridges: Next time you buy, opt for XL or high-yield cartridges. They cost less per page and hold more ink.

• Print Frequently: Printing just one page every few weeks keeps the ink flowing and prevents automatic cleaning cycles from kicking in unnecessarily

• Turn the printer off but always use the printer’s physical power button rather than pulling the plug. The power button “off” will park the printhead into a sealed position preventing air from entering the nozzle.
