I purchased an HP Envy 5660 at a yard sale. The ink has run out, I purchased an HP cartridge, replaced it, now it won't print unless I pay you for a subscription? Is this right? Granted, the printer was a deal at a yard sale but if I can never use it again seems very unfair.

Welcome to the HP English Community --
Sometimes people who initially subscribe to the Instant Ink Service simply "dump and run" after they are no longer using the printer. Without having cancelled the contract, the original owner might sell the printer, drop it at an unsuspecting charity, or give the printer away. Not ideal.
The issue can be sorted (fixed).
An Instant Ink subscription is NOT required to use the printer.
That said, if the previous owner had an Instant Ink subscription and did not remove / cancel the subscription, you might need an HP agent or Instant Ink support agent to help you clean up the mess (remove the old / unwanted account from the printer).
If the account was cancelled by the original owner,
AND
If there are still any Instant Ink cartridges left in the printer -
Remove the cartridge(s) and replace with purchased HP ink.
What?
ALL Instant Ink cartridges must be removed and replaced with purchased ink cartridges --
