HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer

I am replacing my current printer that is enrolled in instant ink. The new printer I bought uses the same type of cartridges. I will be enrolling the new printer in instant ink and disenrolling the old one. Will the cartridges from my old printer function in the new one?

Hi @dkc518

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Yes, the cartridges from your old printer should work in your new printer as long as both printers use the same type of cartridges and are compatible with the Instant Ink program. Here's what you need to know:

1. Cartridge Compatibility

  • If your old and new printer both use the same ink cartridges (e.g., HP 61, HP 952, etc.), the cartridges should be physically compatible with the new printer.
  • Instant Ink eligibility: As long as the new printer is enrolled in the Instant Ink program and is compatible with the cartridges you're using, the Instant Ink service will continue to work.

2. Disenrolling the Old Printer

  • Once you disenroll the old printer from Instant Ink, the service will stop sending you ink for that printer, but it won’t prevent you from using any leftover ink cartridges.
  • Important: If you have Instant Ink cartridges in the old printer, you can use those cartridges in the new printer, but they may no longer be eligible for the Instant Ink service unless the new printer is also enrolled in the program.

3. Re-enrolling the New Printer

  • When you set up the new printer and enroll it in the Instant Ink program, you will receive ink shipments for the new printer.
  • The old Instant Ink cartridges may not be recognized as part of the Instant Ink plan once they are removed from the old printer. If you have extra Instant Ink cartridges (i.e., pre-shipped replacements), you can still use them in the new printer.

4. What to Do with Extra Cartridges

  • If you have extra Instant Ink cartridges for your old printer, you can use them in the new printer, as long as they are the correct type for the new model.
  • HP typically allows you to use the cartridges from the old printer until they run out, and the new printer will continue to receive Instant Ink shipments as long as it is enrolled.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
