macOS 10.12 Sierra

The black Instant Ink cartridge will not function. The error message instructs me to remove and reinstall the cartridge, which I have done (multiple times). I have unplugged and restarted the printer. I have cleaned the contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer with distilled water, as instructed. I have updated the firmware. Same error message: "Remove and reinstall the indicated [black] cartridge." The printer is two years old and out of warranty, so no help from HP.

Addendum: the error message on the computer screen reads "Cartridge Problem:

Black [K]

Cartridges listed above are damaged or have failed.
Remove them and replace with new cartridges.

For problems with cartridges obtained from HP Instant Ink, please contact HP Instant Ink Support Online."

Since this is an Instant Ink cartridge, I think HP should take responsibility for its failure, but the indication on the website is that the problem has to be fixed BEFORE I can get any more from Instant Ink. This seems like a Catch-22.
