WHY do I NEED to be enrolled in HP instant ink to print?

@cakgirl,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

Well, the short answer is: you do not need to be enrolled in HP Instant Ink to print.

However, there are some important distinctions between HP printer models that can create confusion.

  • Standard HP printers can use regular HP cartridges purchased from a retailer or directly from HP, and Instant Ink is entirely optional.
  • HP+ enabled printers (typically models ending in "e", such as the OfficeJet Pro 9125e) include additional requirements if HP+ is activated during setup, including maintaining an HP account and using Original HP ink cartridges.
  • If you enroll in Instant Ink, the cartridges shipped through the service remain tied to the Instant Ink subscription. If the subscription ends, those Instant Ink cartridges stop working and must be replaced with standard retail HP cartridges.

Many users assume that all HP printers operate the same way, but that's no longer the case. Before purchasing a printer, it is important to understand the differences between:

  1. Standard HP printers
  2. HP+ capable printers
  3. Instant Ink subscription service

This is one reason why researching the exact model before purchase is more important than ever. Some buyers prefer the flexibility of purchasing ink whenever and wherever they choose, while others like the convenience of a subscription service.  Personally, I don't care about a subscription service either.

For example, my spivvy-new OfficeJet Pro 9125 (the non-"e" model) compared with the OfficeJet Pro 9125e may appear nearly identical, but they are marketed differently and have different setup options and long-term ownership considerations.

So, if your goal is to avoid subscription-based printing, HP account requirements, or any potential confusion regarding Instant Ink, carefully reviewing the model specifications before purchase can save a lot of frustration later.

Kind Regards,
