HP OfficeJet Pro 9135e All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

I am not enrolled in Instant Ink, however I change out ink cartridges, which are HP from Amazon and I'm getting an error message stating printer cannot be used until enrolled in Instant Ink. The cartridges I replaced were HP from Amazon as well, I've only found one customer service number online and they were no help. This is ridiculous! I need to print for my business!

Please advise!

I have turned off and unplugged the printer, but continue to get the same message.

Hi @KMAC66

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

That error message is incredibly frustrating, especially when you're not enrolled in Instant Ink but still being blocked from printing. HP printers sometimes mistakenly enforce Instant Ink restrictions, even when using genuine HP cartridges.

Here are some troubleshooting steps that might help:

Step 1: Perform a Hard Reset

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it from power.
  2. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the power cord and turn it on.

Step 2: Remove & Reinstall Ink Cartridges

  • Take out the ink cartridges and clean the copper-colored contacts with a lint-free cloth.
  • Reinsert them firmly and restart the printer.

Step 3: Reset Printer to Factory Defaults

  • On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore Defaults.
  • Restart the printer and check if the error persists.

Step 4: Check for Firmware Updates

  • HP has released firmware updates that remove Instant Ink restrictions for some models.
  • Go to HP’s support site and install the latest firmware update.

Try these steps and let me know if the issue persists! We’ll get this sorted so you can get back to printing for your business.
