I have a similar problem. I bought my HP OfficeJet 5525 in August, and today, I had to change the black ink cartridge. Nothing prints in black. When I put the older cartridge back in, some black ink shows, but the new cartridge is DOA. The printer reads the black ink supply as full, but nothing prints in black, and I can't get the color setting to print black letters. So, basically, I have a DOA printer. VERY VERY UNHAPPY WITH HP. I'm sorry that ever bought an HP product and will NEVER do so again.

I have spoken with a Case Manager this morning, and HP is sending me a replacement printer as they think the problem is with the printhead, not the cartridge. As my printer is within warranty, there is no charge, and they have extended the warranty period for the replacement printer. That is a good solution, and I'm happy with it.
